Are negative ratings harassment?

I'm not sure what forum this question belongs but I decided other people should chime in on it. In particular, a particular person[Whom will remain un-named] lodged abuse reports against me when after I found his behavior offensive and thus I gave him a negative rating in behavior. The fact this person continued to harass me and my friends, I considered it decent grounds for a negative behavior rating.

So my question to everyone[LL staff obviously included], is it harassment when I neg rate a person for blantently abusive behavior?

Of course not. That's what it's there for. And anyone petty enough to abuse report a neg rating probably deserves several more for wasting the Lindens time. Fecking idiot.

Not only is that not abuse, you would have been well within your rights to Abuse Report the dumbass that was harassing you. That's what ARs are for as well.

I remember a couple of threads with lots of words, everyone complaining about negrating, seeing people getting banned for using this legit feature of the game, etc blah blah. So you see, not everyone think's the same way about negrating.

We should switch the psychological construct behind rates like the poles on the Earth swapping, so that negrates mean what posrates currently do and viceversa. That'd be SUCH a trip. (Actually, it's what I'm openly hoping for.)

Nope, giving a negative is not harassment.

Gang-negging a person with friends or alt accounts IS harassment. Also, negging new players at the welcome area is frowned upon, but not technically harassment... and some people get off on that.

Remember, however, that many people think that "negative rates given" says a lot more about a player than anything else on their profile, myself included. Some people seem to think neg rating others gives them some kind of power, hehehe. Pretty pathetic. :-)

Please find the threads and list the people who were banned for neg-rating legitimately? I've never heard of this happening, EVER. Using multiple alts and organizing groups of people to neg rate, however, is a ToS violation.

Pos-rating is $25L. I understood that neg-rating was $50L? I haven't neg-rated anyone, I'm asking.

Neg-rating is to be encouraged, and the idea that it is "harassment" and "AR'able" is just silly propaganda.

It only costs $25.

I think it's good to establish a neg-rating policy and stay consistent in using it.

I award negrates liberally for bad behaviour which includes:

o slandering me with false information on the forums
o blocking actual entrance to my land or other's land or using that "subtle" griefing
method of waving trees into a house; this includes building high on water right in front of the mainland or completely blocking entrance on all 4 sides and the view
o lagging sims down to below 100 FPS with excessive scripts, etc.
o heckling, verbally harassing, spewing off-topic comments, etc. at events
o putting up signs flush at the property line so as to annoy

I agree with all of this, especially the second part. I have had the chance to get to know a lot of people in SL, and I've found that the most volatile, untrustworthy people have always been the ones who GIVE lots of neg ratings.

Everyone has to be good at something.

I guess judgemental neg ratings count.

I guess.

There is nothing wrong with neg rating someone who is genuinely annoying or harrassing you, or who's running around griefing. I think neg rating in this way gives the community an idea, when a person reads the profile, of who they may be dealing with.

I think it's a personality thing just like irl. IRL, if I think you're a jerk I primarily will just avoid you, I won't go out of my way to make it a flaming issue. I would never go out of my way to find you in world just because we don't agree here. I would also not develop a group of alts for the specific purpose of neg rating you and trying to yank your chain.

So I guess the really clear answer imho is: depends what you use your neg rates for. People who rate a lot of people negatively...ironically often turn out to be pretty negative people *gasp* :p

I'm still scratching my head over that one. Where would such judgementalism come from? Fear? Inadequacy? Anger?

If I'm in a mature sim and see someone with "escort" over their head riding in the horse races naked (which I did), why on earth would I neg-rate them? I was too busy having fun betting on the horses to worry much about it anyway, but nothing she did made me think she should deserve a neg-rating. If I didn't want to see that kind of stuff, I could go to the PG sims. Or log off.

I guess.

I've never given a neg rating.
