Here's a question. My store/bunker has a World War II theme, and I'm planning on putting up some World War II-themed propaganda posters.

Some of these posters have swastikas on them (look through some of the US war propaganda posters; many of them feature prominent swastikas).

In some European countries, the swastika is banned and illegal to display, even in games.

I plan on blotting out swastikas in the posters I post, but it brings up an interesting question. What's the line to draw? Are items that are legal in the US but illegal elsewhere (such as the swastika) fair game in mature areas?

i think taste and legal issues should beat out historical accuracy in this case...as for broad terms, i think it would be a case by case basis.

swasticas for example are illegal in alot of countries, along with other hate symbols, so it kinda stands out as an example. i'm pretty sure it's against the TOS to post hateful material.

well a swastika could be considered to be covered by the part of the TOS that forbids hate speech.

I guess that's the question. Here's a mental exercise (DISCLAIMER: I'm not a white supremacist or a Nazi or anything; it's just that groups of nice people don't have controversial symbols :-)

I think we can agree that someone actually modeling and scripting a cross burning on their property would be considered hateful content.

What about a picture of a burning cross?

What about a picture of a burning cross in the context of a news article, or a film poster?

I also agree that posting a massive swastika would be considered hateful.

What about a picture of a swastika in the context of an Allied propaganda poster?

What about the von Rosen cross (a similar looking figure used by the Finnish air force which is idealogically completely unrelated to the swastika)? (some Finns on the WWIIOL forums have made issue of this)

There's debates raging in Congress today on what is considered hateful and what is considered free speech. Sooner or later, this same debate will come here.

I'm not one to push it. I'm no Nazi, and I don't feel strongly about it. Like I said, I'm manually editing swastikas out of posters I put on my walls.

However, this will become an issue, because there are extremists, regretfully so, who will push it. I guarantee it.

it will have to be a case by case basis, but i think the context something is used it will have the biggest factor.
