Send an e-mail! I did! You can freely copy this and send it to: devrel@ati.com Dear Sir or Madame, It has come to my attention that there is a critical problem in the "Catalyst" driver set which is offered to all users of the "Radeon" series of video cards you sell. This problem occurs in the massively multiplayer online game known as "Second Life", created by Linden Lab. Unfortunately, it seems that there are several occurrences where a player will be crashed out of the game and a few which require the use of the new VPU recovery system. A portion of these errors are caused by AGP, which must be turned off in order to give the game playability. Aside from the crash related errors, there is also a graphical error in the mip-mapping of the game which needs addressing. This error has plagued Second Life ever since the Catalyst 3.1 drivers were upgraded to 3.2, as the change from one to another is incredibly obvious. I hope that this e-mail and any others that you receive on the same subject will help place this problem higher up on your priority list. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, (insert name here) Note the fact that you have to insert your name... I'm also putting this up at www.davekap.tk

I had to load an earlier driver for another game I'm in a beta test for. I'm finding driver 3.0 works far better than the current drivers.

Don't know, That's the one I've been using. I find it works fine here as well. A lot better than the current 3.8 or whatever it's at now.

problem: earlier drivers don't work at ALL with most newer games (anything released in the last three months).
If all you play is SL, then knock yourself out... otherwise...

Sent.
Now to write an email program that sends the same message every 5 minutes, and we're all set.

I am having the same problem. The biggest problem with the 9700 (and higher maybe) is power. This card gives the power company and run for its money. I always expect it to open a time portal from all the energy its sucking down. Anyway, there is a good post in the technical issues section of this forum. You can find it HERE. Unfortunantly, I only have a 250... I believe ATI recommends 400. Waiting for my 600 to get here in a few days. Oh the agony of down time.

I just figured something out (yes i can be slow on many occasions), AGP Graphics Acceleration = BAD, if you're having problems that is. I don't know why, but for some reason a couple days ago (maybe a week or two) I turned on AGP to see what it did, ouch. I just turned it off last night thinking "Hmm, AGP, thats been mentioned alot, oh wait someone said something about turning it off. *click*", and I haven't crashed since. Its great, I just hope no damage was done to my card, doesn't seem like it so far.
So if you're having problems with an ATI card crashing alot I highly recomend turning off AGP Graphics Acceleration (Edit -> Preferences -> Options -> AGP Graphics Acceleration *uncheck*) and seeing if that helps you any.
I have a Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB) with Catalyst 3.9 drivers for further reference.

Great, Oz, but the whole *point* of getting a Radeon was for the 8x AGP.

Yeah Oz, that's the thing. AGP is automatically disabled when SL is installed because SL detects if you have a Radeon and makes sure to disable it (as LL already knows about this problem). The reason to get on ATi's case is so that they can fricken fix their drivers so we can have our AGP back!
