So when can we expect an increase in prims per square meter and how large will that increase be? For those who are informed, I'd love some information. If none is available, wild speculation will suffice. :D

Probably not for another major point release or two.

LL has said that the prim count will increase with 1.7 and Havok 2. They haven't said how big the increase will be or whether or not it will be in 1.7.0 or 1.7.999, only that it will some time in 1.7.

Wild Speculation:

20,000 prims per sim with the initial release of 1.7

My guess is either what Schwan said, of 17,500. A decent increase offset by Havok 2.

Now, when are we going to get better control over script cycles taken? Places like Hawthorne currently have 65% of the processor being hogged by script cycles, which really could be made inactive since the sim is almost close to empty, save for Chase/RacerX's awesome Snail Races. :-)

Im not sure it will increase with the initial release of 1.7, in fact i very much doubt it, i would of thought they are more likely to deply havok two and see how much of an effect it has on reducing load on the sims to see what margins they can increase prim counts by, that kind of thing is hard to test in the lab and even preview testing wont give a good indication because the servers are old.

Why is it that the number of prims is tied to Havok? I thought that code was specifically for the simulation of physics. Most prims (99%) don't have physics enabled.

Merely as a guess, if its not actual objects then it may be how avatars react with the world, they may use some form of physics, to bounce off walls, other people, fly, walk etc

There have been comments made in town halls that Havok 2 will improve more than just the physics performance. Don't expect it to be the end-all solution to all of SL's problems, but apparently it will give a rather significant performance boost.

Don't forget, avatars are physical objects too :-)

Hmmm, wonder what the upgrade in prims will do to the land economy. My first inclination is to think it will be a wash, but there might be some interesting factors coming into the play....

What kills me is Blaze announced he will be attending the get-together in SF. Now, imagine being there and trying to guess which one is him? Then imagine that he might not even BE there, he might just have said he was going.

Pretty easy to guess, he'd be the one slapping himself on the back before running to the bathroom to change makeup and clothing.

that is good news!!

Hi all!!
I'm not complaining really(maybe just a tiny bit!!), I think SL is fantastic. I've been in for about 3 weeks now and just bought my first land two days ago. Well of course I had to go shopping then!! lol. I found some very cool stuff but with the prim limits am unable to put most of it on my land. I cannot afford to tier up at this time (RL won't support it) so it would be great to be able to put more things on my parcel. I understand there must be limits for lag reasons and whatnot but after I got my house situated all I was able to put up were table and 4 chairs, a hammock, end table, fish bowl and two fire bowl lamps. It looks very empty and uninviting even to me!! I think it would nice for newbies to be able to make a pleasant and welcoming 'home' on a 512 parcel to start our SL lives. I would eventually like to have a shop and from what I've seen so far I have plenty of space to do so if only I could put more prims on it. I haven't found anything other than this issue so far that I'm not happy with. I know I'm very new and have alot to learn but so far I've seen lots of amazing things and have met some really terrific people!! I truely hope the Lindens understand that not all of us can afford their tier prices (in RL) and allowing more prims (quite a few more not just one or two which would not alleviate the problem at all) would make SL all the more inviting and worth sticking around for both new and old.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Leeia, I felt some of the same frustration when I started building on my Land For The Landless plot in Drawbridge many months ago. Since I didn't want to tier up at that point, I took it as a challenge to try and build low prim count things. Granted I was already intent on building, but maybe you'll want to give it a try to see how far you can take it. Much can be done with hollow, cut prims to stretch that prim count. And if you're not a builder, take it as a shopping challenge to find good, low prim items.
