Is there a list of Sims somewhere. I'm looking for something that shows what each sim is like, style wise (ie..Japanse, German, etc...). I'm looking to purchase more land and thought something like this would be very useful. If anyone knows of something like this, please let me know. Thanks!

Don't think there are such lists available. Most sims are not themed or zoned at any rate.

I know that some of Anshe Chung's private islands are culturally themed.

Also Higbee Protagonist has a rather fabulous searchable directory of (mainly) natural attractions at his SL Parks and Recreation Directory

And Landmarker is an excellent tag based directory of SL places. If you know del.icio.us, you'll feel right at home here.

Neualtenburg is a themed community and the style is based on Bavarian architecture (old style to modern). You can follow the links in my signature to find out more. :)

On this note, is that flash video still around that shows the grid growing? That was really neat but I lost my bookmark. There was another than was pictures of the grid at different points too. OR, is there a list of when each sim came online? Would be neat to see how the world has changed.

You find landmarks to some of the themed Dreamland regions in the classified links section. You should especially visit Asian region (Matsushima, Miyajima, Suzhou, Hangzhou) and the Arabian desert sims (A'ksha Dunes, A'ksha Oasis, A'ksha Mesa, A'ksha Caves) :-)
