"We are planning on updating Second Life to version 1.6.6 Tuesday, May 31st from 6:00 AM PST to 12:00 Noon PST. During that time Second Life will be unavailable. Also, in order to accommodate some of the changes in 1.6.6, we will be disabling new account registration briefly around 8:00 AM. If you get the chance, please go to preview and help us test 1.6.6. The preview client can be found here: http://www.secondlife.com/previewFollowing are the 1.6.6 Release Notes. Please review them, as there are some important changes in this release to email in particular. Second Life 1.6.6(4) May 31, 2005 =============================== • Inventory moved to a new database cluster to improve server performance. • Limit the email queue for object to 101 emails. • Internal changes to how avatar appearance and outfits are saved to improve server performance. • Removed the default People Find to improve server performance. • Cache files are no longer cleared when updating to a new version. • Fixed a problem where llGetNextEmail would not always deliver email. • Fixed a number of simulator crashes. • Removed Sponsored Links from Find in preparation for adding Classified Ads." What classfied ads? Yes I did a search. Yes I tried the preview; it's down. So what's this about? Cat

Probably just that... allowing anyone to put an ad out for various categories of stuff. It's been an often-requested feature, at least.
Probably won't be out til 1.7 though.

There have been at least three open, public, announced meetings for event planners, and at least 2 town halls, where this issue was discussed.
It has been discussed quite a bit in the forums too.
It is being done in response to all those who find Tringo such an eyesore (or who used to find all the sexay av contests of yore an eyesore).
It's supposed to accommodate this concern by adding filters, so you can sift out, say, only Arts or only Education.

There are billboards in the newbie area that you can rent space on via ebay auction but they can only be used to display PG material.
I don't know why LL should expect us to advertise inworld using SL like it's some kind of useful medium. "...I mean, why aren't Verizon board meetings done 100% on cell phones? I mean, they sell the damn things, surely it should be good for EVERYTHING!
Should Western Union employees be forced to send telegrams to each other for daily communications?
ATTN JOE AT THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT STOP EAGER TO SEE NEW LOGOS FOR PACKAGING STOP TELEGRAM ME WHEN YOU WANT TO GO TO LUNCH STOP
... and so on.
What a silly proposition/demand." - LF
Can't we all just immerse ourselves in the world and stop trying to use the software constructively like it's some kind of real life tool?

Cat Ditto. Oddly, I must have missed the discussion about in-world classifieds and billboards in the welcome area. Need more coffee, I guess. Can someone please post a link to the discussion?

Can someone please post a link to the discussion? I believe people claimed it was discussed during the town halls. I didn't read through any of the town hall logs to verify this, and I don't attend town halls as I always fear I will be crushed between the massive egos, which are as imposing as great ships of the line. You might try browsing through the town hall logs to see for yourself. Or wait for someone else to come along and present the matter. If you're interested in making sure that the classified ad function is as useful as possible, you should send your suggestions to the Lindens. I don't think it hasn't been implemented yet, so there is still time to make suggestions to improve the functionality of the coming ad system.

From: Catherine Cotton ok seriously since this has been obviously talked about lots can someone post some links to the threads in which is was discussed. Fourm search obviously was of little help. I've been at all the Events Work Group meetings where this was discussed. I don't recall if there has been any specific discussion of classifieds on the forums, but it has been mentioned, though not covered in detail, in all four of the meetings. Minutes of the meetings have not been published to the forums as far as I know, and TOS/CS prevent me from posting the emailed minutes here. But to sum up... One problem we are trying to address is that the events listings are being spammed by listings of non-events that are just advertising. (Yard sale? Yeah, that's an event.) The thought is to provide actual advertising via classifieds. If people have that, they won't need to use the event listings to fake events just to get advertising space. That's about it. All the details still have to be worked out, but the eventual goal is to allow google-type searching. If you're interested in being part of the Events World Group, contact Robin Linden. So far we've mainly been working on new categories for the event listings. Soon we'll be looking at incentives and support type stuff.

This is from the town hall with Robin, go and read the entire transcript up in the Linden announcements: From: someone Robin Linden: Nekokami Dragonfly: Can we have in-world classified advertising? Would a Better Business Bureau be part of contracts? Robin Linden: Yes, I'm looking for efficient ways to add classified advertising to the Find directory. Robin Linden: Longer term we want to have robust search possibly using tags. Robin Linden: A BBB is an option, as is a Seal program. The question is whether or not LL would create this or a resident would. At the events planning meetings it has also been discussed. I wasn't able to notecard those discussions because it was too laggy, and I don't know if they will be posted, but the gist of it was: there will be classified ads sections in the game which can be filtered for different topics. If you have ideas for the topics you can e-mail them to Robin.
