Ok, I'm going to have to use a lot of hyperlinks for this, to help the kiddies understand this. When I got home today, as is my wont to do, I watched today's two tivo'd episodes of Match Game . In the second episode, the celebrity in the top left (first) seat was David Doyle , who you might know as Bosley in the TV Series Charlie's Angels . They introduced him as being from Charlie's Angels, which means this episode was filmed between 1976 and 1981. Ok, now in the lower middle seat, (that Richard Dawson occupied so much in the early years) sat Gary Burghoff, and some simple fact checking shows that Burghoff was a regular on Match Game from 1979 through 1981. So I can thus infer that this episode was made between 1979 and 1981. They had made a contemporary Carter joke on the episode before this, so I can assume it was 1979 or 1980 when this was made, as Reagen was inaugurated in January 1981. So we're sticking with '79 or '80 (this is important momentarily) Ok now here's where it get weird. The host, Gene Rayburn asked a question that went: "The Warden said, 'I'm used to seeing people sneaking files into prison, but this last guy was ridiculous, he tried to sneak in a Blank'". The contestent picked "chain saw", which I didn't think was a very good answer, and she only managed to get one match. After this question though, Gene Rayburn said to a panelist "read my answer, I had a really good one this time", and she held up his answer, which was "Laser Beam". Now I think this answer, frankly sucked; but what happened next has me really freaked out. The audience booed that answer, and Gene said "That's a great answer, you can cut through any prison in the world with a laser beam" and then he started walking back to the contestants. You can at this point hear David Doyle say, VERY CLEARLY, "Or listen to a disk, an audio disk", which drew a chuckle from Brett Somers . Ok I listened to this on the tivo 4 times to make sure I heard it right. As you can read here, here , and here the Compact Disk was being designed in 1979, and wasn't released anywhere until 1982, and not in the US until 1983. So what in the name of all that's Holy was David Doyle talking about? Logically, it has to be one of 3 things: 1) There was another sort of audio disc being read by a laser in 1979 or 1980 that I've never heard of (anyone know? I don't think there was). 2) David Doyle for some unknown reason had access to the top-secret Phillips Lab designing this media and decided to mention it on national television. 3) Time travel is possible, and he went back in time with the knowledge of CD's and accidentally mentioned it on the show (or we live in a Matrix reality). Seriously - WTF is this? How is he making a joke about a device that doesn't exist? Thanks for any help. Taco

I think your info about the early history of the CD is incomplete. This resource seems to suggest that public demos of the tech were being made as early as 1978. From: someone 1977 Mitsubishi, Hitachi & Sony show digital audio disc prototypes at the Tokyo Audio Fair. JVC Develops Digital Audio Process 1978 Philips releases the video disc player Sony sells the PCM-1600 and PCM-1 (digital audio processors) "Digital Audio Disc Convention" Held in Tokyo, Japan with 35 different manufacturers. Philips proposes that a worldwide standard be set. Polygram (division of Philips) determined that polycarbonate would be the best material for the CD. Decision made for data on a CD to start on the inside and spiral towards the outer edge. Disc diameter originally set at 115mm. Type of laser selected for CD Players. 1979 Prototype CD System demonstrated in Europe and Japan. Sony agrees to join in collaboration. Sony & Philips compromise on the standard sampling rate of a CD -- 44.1 kHz (44,100 samples per second) Philips accepts Sony's proposal for 16-bit audio. Reed-Solomon code adopted after Sony's suggestion. Maximum playing time decided to be slighty more that 74 minutes. Disc diameter changed to 120mm to allow for 74 minutes of 16-bit stereo sound with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz

Maybe they altered the timeline to include that resource, though.
I bet Torley is involved somehow.

Just wondering...
Why do all these people have a BS in Physics? Philip Linden, and the guy who invented the CDROM, and many other people that I've seen have the same degree.

Maybe he meant a vinyl record. The term DJ (disk jockey) suggests they are called disks. On a semi-related note, a fun site about analog vinyl video disks. Technology is fun.

They're literally talking about Laser Discs. Or in the case of devices that play them, Laser Disc Players (LDPs). They were huge cd looking things and were available to the consumer mass market in 1980, thus fitting your timeframe.
