I love the creative things produced by all of us in SL. I really do. Amazing architectural marvels from every tradition in cultural design imbued with rich textures and amazing working elevators, opening doors, etc.

But what drives me wacky is what happens when I mouse over 95% of them:

Object
(No Description)

AAARRRGH! A wonderful illusion shattered by the moral equivalent of the manufacturers tag hanging off the every piece of the construction materials! And this is most common amongst our most prolific builders!

Why do we spend hours on our textures, sounds, sizing, rotating, placing, linking, and scripting our prims but can’t spend 5 seconds typing “Wall” into the name field?

Here are two suggestions, one for us, and one for Linden:

1) Pick a regular time to assign a name and always do it, even for experiments: Here’s what I do: I will not assign a texture/color to a primitive until I have set the name and description fields. If I need to make a copy of a prim, I will always name it and write a description before I duplicate it to save time later.

2) I’d like to suggest that the mouse-over code be changed to not display the object name if it is “Object”. This would have the instant benefit of making 95% of all objects instantly more attractive. :-)

good point :D i like your ideas :D but ...i know you dont want to hear but...

I realy do not have the time to waste naming every object I create be it a door a wall ect. I do however name the important ones.

long as i know what they are and most oters do it seems silly to name it. like a door for example, i know it's a door cause visually, i see it, my brain interprets it as a door and tells me hey that's a door. Basic stuff being named is not necesaary, however things that's hard to tell just what the hell it is I can see.
