Ok, who's gonna write a bank script?

Couldn't we do that? I mean we can allow access by the players name right? Would the scripting allow us to give/take money from a persons "account" held privately in the script? Hmm...

It's not needed. You can hold as much money on your av as you have. Banks lead to an increase in the overall money supply. Banks lead to inflation, inflation leads to higher prices, higher prices lead to suffering.

Banks are a function of real world economics. They aren't needed in SL.

A bank would allow people to get around the 3500 cap, which would be cheating. Some people have tried to pull this off but their little trick was promptly shot down by the Lindens.

Banks allow for financing. People who place their $$ with a bank will receive interest and the bank can pull together large amounts of cash to invest into other endeavors, hopefully profitable ones.

This allows people to make their $$ earn $$ and not get caught up in group dynamics or investing decisions. Granted they would need to trust the bank...hehe.

Lets not rule it out....lets help someone find a way to do it so its beneficial and has a sense of SL style.

Being that their isn't any data storage that i know of in SL, its dangerous to store that type of data in the system. I would recommend emailing each transaction to an external data repository, for auditing and safe keeping.

However, i am guessing a dummy char would be needed to maintain the bulk of the cash and to track transactions as well. I think this may go against the TOS, however I do not know...i would recommend you research the TOS to the n'th degree before heading down this path. Once a TOS friendly route is determined, that will drive some of your technology decisions to an extent.

Good luck on your endeavor.

Banks

Bob,
There was once a bank like you say in Boardman. I used it
for many weeks. However The Player that built the bank left the game all together and I did lose money. The Lindens to my Knowledge did NOT shut it down. I simply was told by the Lindens that the player left the game.

I would Like to see a post Here by a LINDEN to state the legalities of a bank .

There have been several different banks in SL. One, started in the very early days, used a MySQl database to keep track of deposits. In another instance someone offered to hold deposits, but then when he quit the game he neglected to tell his depositors. By the time we found out about it his account had been expunged so the $L couldn't be recovered. So that's a risk.

We think having a banking system within SL is a great idea, and would certainly not discourage anyone from starting something up. The only caveat is that we can't play the role of FDIC if money is lost, so make sure you trust your banker.

That would actually be kinda interesting... although I come from a long line of FPS's. The "Wild West" of online gaming. I think I read an article about that somewhere, probably different subject though.
