And I'm not talking about yiff or cybering, either. All I've seen, really, are a few parcels of land dedicated to vampires and the whole slavery bit.
Are there any areas dedicated to freeform roleplay? Ones that are open to anybody regardless of whatever race they're playing?

The whole playground is a potential roleplaying paradise. However, most people are too busy playing Tringo to explore it. Maybe you'll have good fortune talking others into to, but I'd not hold my breath. :)

Where.

I usually play with the slavers since the vampire theme doesn't do anything for me, and a lot of the slavery-types are pretty coherent, if a bit shallow. The slavery-types don't seem to mind my hard-core roleplay. Come down to Port Kar some time and let's chat, Xeile; maybe we can work something out to drag some of these people out of lifestyle and into roleplay with some depth :)

I'll try to IM you Xeile, if I see you ingame.

Try visiting ElvenGlen, it's a fantasy themed sim dedicated mostly to elven-kind, though since I've built my Orcish Embassy there have been quite a number of orcs running about the place! :D

Anytime I am there I use my orc avatar and try to keep up an orcish persona (mostly the Warcraft type, with alot of the Warhammer type thrown in for humor.) Most folks there also try to keep up their own personas, usually elven.

Also I think the Chicago 1920's sim is shooting for a roleplay type atmosphere. I've been thinking of going there as a Lovecraftian type protagonist.

We're working on creating a FFRP area in SL based on our IRC roleplaying. The site is http://www.kaerwyn.com but we're still working on a few things (Such as the rules, addition to the site for SL RPing, and building more in-world RP areas to use).

I'm hoping to have it up and running by next week. You can come check it out if you want, the main RP is based in a large tavern on our land, that's still somewhat under construction, but nearly finished.

I always thought SL would be the perfect medium for old-school Pen and Paper RPGs. Heck, even sitting at a virtual table would be cool.. just roll those dice, baby! :)

As for free-form social roleplay... well I dunno. I think it happens all the time all over the place. ;)

I think Toxius was thinking of doing something like this. I know little or nothing about role playing games but I would give it a shot just to see what this is all about.

I'd always been doing some very light roleplaying, but that could be really just mistaken for joking around and what not.

I once saw a few months ago roleplaying events, but it didn't last long. Basically yeah, best you can get is Gorean stuff, Vampires, and the occassional random roleplayer you might cross.

If you really want something like this, then you'd probably need to start a group yourself. You can use this as a launching point. If you get a few people from here, and spread the word, eventually roleplayers will start poping up and asking to join.

If you build it, they will come :P

Hey Schlitzie! How's it going?

I saw the embassy. And I feel the need to mention his excellent Orc avatars. High quality stuff.

Any FFRP place that has room for a giant talking bird is where I wanna be. Awk!

Some controlled FFRP (IE no griefing) would be fun, count me in. :>

Problem (or not, opportunity?) in SL is that there are things that will tend to break you out of character, given that this is such a diverse place. Like, I'm a roleplaying timetraveller, but I don't do it totally seriously. Sure, I have a storyline I go by and a blog with my adventures (compulsory at some point) but I touch on all topics of discussion with a variety of friends.

It's kinda like... some Goreans I know are into bargains... so I bet it's kind of a funny moment when they are carrying out their respectful duties and then, all of a sudden, EVENT NOTIFICATION! ***YARD SALE AT 3 PM*** lolz. :)

Something universal about SL is humor, in all its many strands. And genuine laughter, felt from the gut? Can't fake that. Unless you're roleplaying [insert name of X or Y comic here].

Roleplay is alive and well

Hello All,

Well i'm the creator and designer of Port Kar a city from the Gorean books by John Norman and yes there is alot of sex in Gorean culture, but alot of us over on the now expanding continent are trying to change the idea that it's just about sex and slaves. You will find a great deal of rp in Port Kar if you are interested in it and we are building a wonderful library to expand the knowledge of what Gor truely is. I will not ramble on much more. Just wanted to add my two cents for what it is worth.

Traditionally I just deal.. after two years in Galaxies listening to "DUDA!1!1!1! LOL U RILLY GOT NYAXS SWORD???!? OMG WTF LOL U ROK!!1!! WTF" and et cetera, I've become pretty thick-skinned. Move along, move along. It's a lot easier maintain immersion when those around you are working towards the same ends you are.

The only drawback about this is generally, you're RPing a human-ish. ^_^

I build birds because I like birds (and RPing them <er phoenixes, anyways> soemtimes!) Though Tarns don't really sound very sociable. =D

(Being a bird allows me to ignore the quizzical sexual advances of you strange plucked pink things. I'm teasing, but you know what I mean in general) :)

ElvenGlen, SimCast and Bedford are all RPG environments, although all three are fairly new and just starting to get into true RPG operation. SimCast and Bedford both support both RPG and PVP game modes. ElvenGlen is a residential area where people live "in character" as Elven, human, faerie, orc and dragon races (thus far). ElvenGlen also hosts sporting events such as Instinctual Archery and BattleMace, as well as serving as host to the SL Poetry Guild.

All three sims are open to the public and are lovely places to visit and play.

As a followup to my "Yes" post I wanted to elaborate just a bit. If you are looking for roleplay like "I take my mighty sword and smite thee soundly on the noggin" I doubt if you will find much of that in Second Life. One of the beauties of Second Life is that you don't need to describe what you are doing in words, you just do it. :)

If by roleplay you mean setting up a theme and living by it I think you will find some of that if you look around as some others mentioned. I will give you an example. My partner and I decided we wanted to be forest rangers so we got some woods which will remain forever wild. To exist there we built a small cabin, outhouse and a few other primitive items and when we are there you won't see us running around in high heels and and city clothes. We wear our forest ranger uniforms. for the most part, and go around planting trees. We have tried to make it as real as possible by adapting our appearances and behavior to the environment we have created.

Maybe this isn't roleplay at all but it sure is fun.

Could someone toss me an IM if they decide to start a Cyberpunk FFRP? I'm generally interested in persistent-character stuff, and I'm completely fine with freeform, but it'd be awesome if we could get some simple rulesets and a few scenarios going.

I'd start a group myself but I don't have the provisions to really achieve what I'd want if I could have it my way. Which means a plot of land and some skyscrapers :D

Well... I'm trying to set up a RP group. But this won't be free-form RP. It will be base on George Martin's saga "A Song of Ice and Fire". I am collectiong people that have read the books. The idea is still just that "an idea". But who knows, with time and enough people something good come out of it.

Of course anyone that is interesting can drop me an IM in-game. :D
