My hard drive failed(again) and so I gotta get it replaced. I don't want to replace it if it's going to fail again. So my question is, what can I do to prevent this from happening?

Edit: My computer maker is stupid :p

ok so even though we payed 100 dollars for a 3 year service plan, they have no record of the purchase even though we have a reciept. I am really starting to dislike the company.

Ok anyway my question is, my CD drive is failing now too and was wondering if it was possible for the IDE controller being the one causing the failures(or just reporting them)?

P.S. I have no idea what an IDE controller is :p I just know it's connected to the only two devices that have failed on this comp.

Derek, I am not exactly a computer scientist (more like a computer backyard mechanic), but I do know that your hard drive and CD drive are directly connected to your IDE controller. Maybe your problem is deeper than failing drives. Bad motherboard?

One other thing... who made this machine?

Computer still broken :( They call it a next day service warranty. Try a next month service warranty

Rot TO live by..((Rule of Thumb))

Always keep a spare computer around!

Always Reinstall everything at least once every six months. This allows you to reformat the hard drive and check for any bad sectors the reformat will also help with over taxing the harddrive to push it to the point of failure if its getting really old.

Also when you do this you can clean up any left over trash from programs you have installed and removed.

Good Luck Derek

Good news, got a new harddrive! So I'll be back to daily usage of SL again. Thanks for everyone's opinions as I go through that tough time of my life (hah) :p
