Hmnnn... I'd like to. As a builder, scripter, writer, tech guru, and web designer, I found that SL offers a lot to a person like me.

I currently do phone based tech support, so sitting in front of a monitor for untold hours working is no stranger to me. I just want to ENJOY what I do for a full time job. And SL... I enjoy that.

Problem is, not many people on SL could afford a full time employee to do what I can do. While it would be nice, I just don't think anyone can pay out the cashflow in a steady stream to assure any minimal form of job security.

Then again, I would like to be pleasently surprised. Who know's what the future holds? :D

I quit my day job quite awhile ago to work in the MetaVerse (fancy name for the internet).

SL is a lucrative part of the MetaVerse, certainly. However, when you're small and independent (like me) it is often wise to diversify your revenue sources unless you see an opportunity to sprint for the brass ring.

In other words, yes, you can definitely quit and work in the MetaVerse - however, I'd find basing it soley on SL a bit risky.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

I might, but SL would have to become much larger, more stable, and more secure than it is now. Corporations - big, real ones - would have to start taking it seriously as a telepresence/telecommuting facility. Right now, even LL doesn't use it for telecommuting, except for Liaisons. At least not that I've heard of.

At a minimum, it would need to be able to capture the GUIs of external applications. I'd have to be able to run (for example) Excel in a window in Second Life, and have that show up on the face of a prim or in a window that a coworker could also see. This is technically possible (it's been done for a long time in other apps) but not trivial.

Come back in 10 years or so and ask that question again, provided that SL is still here in 2015.

well lets look at ways you can make money and what makes the most from doing so

GOM
scripting
clothes
actions(those movement loops)
hosting events

that is really all there is to it? im guessing that if you strike a good idea for a game, and get a good contract (like a commision on daily earnings from it) you could do well. (500 a month about)

that seem about right?

I know several people who now make their living off SL or are really close to it. All of them, except for myself, are content barons.

I've considered quitting my job and just doing this full time. :D Not that I would have far to go as I only work 20 hours a week.

I have been trying to do make that jump all year. I don't make nearly enough to support myself on my own, but I have a bag of tricks and stuff is growing. I work in Telecom now and I have to say - working for The Man gets old :)

I really wish SL could be my RL job. Unfortunately the cost of life here means I'd have to make over 2000 $ a month :(

I have a real life career I love and would never be able to quit no matter what. However, Second Life has become a decent second income. All the money I make from SL goes into my childrens college funds.
