Elka, I watched this. It's not clear who was doing it. Maybe a sherrif's office from one of the parrishes.
It was not the army. The army doesn't deserve unkind words. coco _____________________

That's just so sick. It sounds to me like that Serriff's deputy they interviewed has gone a little crazy from the stress. Somehow it's "humane" to shoot a perfectly healthy dog when there's a feeding station three blocks away. His story about his friend "almost getting ate up by a pitbull" was so obviously bogus. He could at least have picked a less cliche species.
As tragic as this is, the deeper concern here is who are people like this gonna be shooting next? It's obviously about rage and frustration, not about what's "humane". They just want to shoot SOMETHING. Today it's a dog; tomorrow it could easlily be people. Notice the deputy was not in uniform. He obviously was acting personally, not in any official capacity. Oh, and Elka, while I agree with you in principle that armies are pretty stupid things, it's worth pointing out that the soldiers in the video were the ones feeding the dogs. It was a police officer and his buddies who were shooting them. _____________________

It definately sucks but this is something that has to be done. Roving packs of dogs are attacking people trying to help them....many of them have been without food and water and are starting to eat and drink spoiled food and water......rabies will follow in suit.
There are many rescuers getting dogs and cats to a makeshift rescue center which at last count had over 2000 animals. With their owners being evacuated these animals will have no home for a very long time if ever. Last but not least do you really think the people putting these animals down enjoy doing it? Many of you have given to the red cross....how many of you have given to the animal equivelant? If you want to help the LSPCA is taking donations.... http://www.la-spca.org/ _____________________

At any time? or just over this issue? The army is kinda sensitive. We wouldn't want to crush its ego, or it might go home and cry all evening while sucking down chunky munky by the gallon... |

I didn't click that link but I hope it's only an isolated area that's occuring in...damn assholes! How could we be THAT helpless that we can't even feed puny animals who eat about as much as a kid at most?

At any time? or just over this issue? Well Dianne, it's just evident to me that I have a different life view from a number of people here. Including that most people are basically good, NOT basically sucky (or inferior to us). This includes people in the army. Saying "f*** the stupid army" just kinda rubs me the wrong way, ya know? It rubs me hugely the wrong way, in fact. coco P.S. Elka, I understand that you were mad - it is terrible seeing things like this. But then, read what Talen said. Those issues come into play, too, and maybe that is the reasoning behind this. I don't agree with it. But that probably is the reasoning. _____________________

stupid army, fuck them You didn't even WATCH the video did you? The Army's rounding up the dogs and keeping them alive until the ASPCA arrives. A bunch of dickheads in a red jeep, uniniformed, are riding around shooting dogs. You really need to learn how to not jump to conclusions by watching the first 4 seconds of a video. Maybe you'll appear more intelligent. _____________________

Dogs are cute. Until they gnaw on the faces of the bloated dead... Best to collect both up fast, treated appropriately, but if they can't........ If one of those dead was your relative......... One more unpleasant question. Once a pet has eaten from a person, is it ever as trustworthy again ? Would you want to take it home and receive its kisses ? Leave it near your defenceless baby ? |

I just got to hear from my cousin, three weeks ago her cat had kittens, and they told her she had to leave her cat and kittens there and save herself.
it crushed my heart to hear something like this, that cat was her best friend for more then 7 years. so this whole situation sickens me, Shooting healthy dogs, its like shooting humans on four legs, I feel so sad for those dog owners and cat and any kind of pet. of course what ellie said is true, how much trust you put in your animal not to eat your own face, as much as we have to face those facts its just sad and sickening to see whats happening I hope my friend's cats are okay, imagine being so tiny while havoc breaks out all over, and thats just one of the billion things happening thats sickening and heartbreaking. _____________________

of course what ellie said is true, how much trust you put in your animal not to eat your own face, as much as we have to face those facts its just sad and sickening to see whats happening Call me a skeptic, but I have a feeling that if a dog isn't starving, it isn't going to go face-eating. They're not wolves or anything. Dogs rely on us to be their society because they are gentically retarded and can't ever be fully mature animals. I think that if dogs are eating dead humans, it's probably because they're hungry and see them as meat. People would do the same if they got hungry enough. The disease issue is a whole other thing, though. Should we shoot them because they might spread disease? I don't know. I'm on the fence on that one. _____________________

If you want to help the LSPCA is taking donations.... http://www.la-spca.org/ Talen, this is exactly the reason I believe this is being done. And yeah it sucks royally, but I fully agree on *why* this has to happen. I freak if one of my cats is missing in my own home too long (I have three). I won't leave on a trip without kissing each of them and making sure they are safe. I am a major pet person. But I still understand why this action needs to happen. And as much as I love my pets and they are my family. I would sacrifice one in a heartbeat if I had to choose between them and my daughter or husband. Or if them living could mean the death of any other *human* being. _____________________

We don't know enough to judge. Only someone with a thorough understanding of dog and cat psychology could tell you whether such an act alters them permanently, and renders them potentially dangerous. Certainly in the indian subcontinent I understand that it is normal practice to hunt down any tiger that has even once tasted man. Not as revenge, but on the basis that this behaviour, once learned, will inevitably repeat. Tigers aren't retarded through thousands of years of selective breeding and still have strong instincts that guide them to hunt. Even physically adult dogs will never be anything more than wolf puppies. I also speak siberian husky and 24 other variants of domestic canidae and also have some light knowledge of conversational tanuki. I've counselled many dogs regarding the effects of owner abuse and have a pretty decent grasp on their psychology. Once, in the bush, I even managed to coax a tribe of dingos to bring me to a watering hole in exchange for some promises that I can't repeat because they wouldn't make logical sense in English. _____________________

Certainly in the indian subcontinent I understand that it is normal practice to hunt down any tiger that has even once tasted man. Not as revenge, but on the basis that this behaviour, once learned, will inevitably repeat. That's a practice based in superstition, not in science. There's nothing in the biology to suggest that tasting human flesh provokes any behavioral change... although, in the case of large predators like the tiger, the ACT of successfully hunting a human might tend to reinforce future attempts to do the same. Eating human flesh is such a cultural taboo that we react against it to the exclusion of rational thought. But we are not so savory that Fluffy will be plotting our demise just for another taste. _____________________

There's nothing in the biology to suggest that tasting human flesh provokes any behavioral change... It would probably be hard to find someone qualified to give us an answer. I doubt much relevant research has been done. Except perhaps maybe in india, or other places blest by powerful predators. |

THey are not just walking around shooting dogs. They are shooting only those that are a risk to people or diseased.
Our media of course will not position the story about that, because thier job is to tug at peoples heart so they will buy more news and do stuff like post links to thier fabricated story all over the internet. _____________________

More likely the situation is being underreported by the media. Both soldiers and police in the area have been seen confiscating camera and recording equipment when caught doing anything that portrays them unflatteringly. Journalists have been doing a much better job reporting on this disaster than anybody in government has done in responding to it. And on a side note, force me to choose between my pets and obeying civil authorities in a crisis, and the civil authorities can kiss my unruly ass. _____________________
