So let’s do the math for fenik's simple platform (and please let me know if I see this incorrectly):
OLD OBJECT SCHEME:
1 10x10x? platform 10 meters off the ground = $ 3L 4 10x?x? posts for the platform to sit on = $12L
total tax = $15L
NEW OBJECT SCHEME:
1 10x10x? platform 10 meters off the ground = $ 30L 4 10x?x? posts for the platform to sit on = $120L
new tax total =$150L
How is this better? What about those with more intricate housing (and not just castles in the sky) than mine? Is there going to be a Linden sponsored homeless center built with all the newly collected housing taxes?
And again, please correct me if I am wrong, which I hope I am.

You know, I have no idea what my taxes were before, but you seem to have the perfect situation to check.... Could you post what your new taxes really are when this gets implemented? Don't fear yet, because, first off, I think the maximum tax is for an object that is 10X10X10.... all three dimentions, plus it has to be high off the groud (I think, have to reread?). I really don't understand this one?? I can't see how it takes any more rendering/server load for an object to be off the ground? Well anyway, it is a totally new concept to have a realistic economy here, If I may predict.... I'd say that for the rest of SL's life, even if it's 20 years in the future, you are going to have economic adjustments... just like in the real world to keep things balanced. I think SL should be a requirement for every Economy student~ Love Ingie

I don't think the altitude of an object has anything to do with server load or anything....they just don't want the skies cluttered....therefore only the rich will be able to afford such extravagances

with the new tax system, they are suggesting that we all live on or around the same z coordinate, it is the same reason that fly works the way it does.

Have you noticed how, when you zoom up quite high while flying, you eventually hover back down to a certain level above ground?
It's most noticable if you don't move about. You do float down a bit.
I think this is what Nada is talking about, though I could be wrong... :)

so in other words it's just so some people don't get lost too far up? (or hide?)

it seems to me that building high would actually reduce the rendering/server load, because you wouldn't see those objects and textures unless you were also flying high. darn, just when i was planning to make an deluxe condo at 400m. bp

Actually high objects are less likely to be hidden by land or closer objects, meaning they are more likely to be rendered by more people. I don't know how the server works to know how or if that relates to server load. If the server is only sending to you what you can see, then yes, high in the sky castles are going to cause more data sent out over the network. If on the other hand everything in your radius is always sent to you, or some variation of that, then it won't matter because the object either is or isn't inside that range.

Okay, you know what my big problem with the proposed tax system is? The fact that it seems designed to pick on people with basements. My building is about 15-20 metres high.... but I've lowered the terrain about 20 metres below it, for a workshop. As a result, I'm about to have to remodel or move completely. Needless to say, I don't care for either option at all.
It seems to me that if the intended purpose of the new tax system is to restrict people from building big eyesore monstrosities that you colide with every time you try to fly somewhere (which they'd still be able to circumvent by moving terrain anyway, then why not attempt to measure objects by how far above the AVERAGE terrain level they want to "let" us build by just setting either a system-wide variable, or individually, sim-by-sim. That's no less fair than the proposed system.
The fact of the matter is, neither plan even makes sense. If someone's going to build some big hulking tower, they're doing it either as a monument to the fact that they CAN, or to be annoying. Architecturally, there's very little point to build something like that -- definitely not what you want if you're opening a store. (Granted, there are some exceptions... there actually aren't many tall or floating structures that are deliberately (or unthinkingly) annoying...)
Still, this whole thing seems like a bad idea for most of us.

It's sad, because I've seen some cool towers and "castles in the air". I hate to see them all torn down for taxes. The tower of Morder is awesome I do understand taxing items by their size though. I staked myself a nice little island, only to have a concert stage go up next door overnight. Now I have a nice view of a wall Anyway, I'm sure taxes will be adjusted a few more times before the game goes live. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
