Just an observation I am making but from my understanding there are only a few real differences between the mature Grid and the Teen Grid. With these differences it seems there is alot of people wanting to move more towards the Mature Grid emulating the Teen Grid. Am I correct in this view or am I just having another clueless day? Look at all the threads about "escorts" and "sex". Are we going to want censorship to come next so we can't talk like George Carlin throughout the grid? Personally I think the MatureGrid should be opened up more then it currently is and let us all be adults. I know it is a pipe dream that we act that way but again no need to argue that point.

Does anyone else want to toss in NICE comments about this. I don't want this turning into anything hostile.

Im all for freedom of expression, but even I get scared when I think of a main grid that is *more* open than it is now.....what cant you do that you would like to?

Basically 2 or 3 people expressing their opinions, not the Lindens or even a significant portion of the SL membership. Meh :)

No.

Opened up more *how* exactly? It's already wide open, except you can't harrass, stalk or grief. But those are the behaviors of juveniles, not mature people.

Sorry, Foulcault, I woulda posted something really hostile but I couldn't think of anything. I'll try harder, honest!

It's not that I can't do something. I'm just noticing that for today as example this sudden attack on "escorts" and 'sex". Do we really want to make it harder for them to do what ever it is they do. I mean this is the mature grid, why not advertise it as such. Guess I just have a more strange view coming from a game that allowed Perm-killing and unconsentual sex (I'm at work).

Again as stated earlier I came from a game where "escorts" were allowed, supported, and ran as free as tringo (scary thought actually). I mean I hear we have to "work around" mature things like escort and sexual event postings. WHY!. Can't we just have a "Blow eachother up" free for all shooting event (True would be shortlived but fun) or even sexual events without someone throwing a hissy? From my understanding the answer is no unless you use every innuendo in the book and hope someone figures it out.

Well work harder next time. What am i paying you for if you can't at least verbal trash talk about me in the forums. ;)

The thing I keep hearing about the TG is what a tight-knit sense of community it has. Sort of like the MG back when it was the OG*.

Here's the thing though...the TG is gonna grow, just like our grid has, and one day that community is not going to be so tight. Personally, I would not be surprised if eventually the TG has a bigger population than the MG...kids have a lot more free time than working adults, and when they decide they like something it'll spread pretty fast by word-of-mouse.

When SL was young, the first wave of citizens were the pioneering types, interested in the possibilities, willing to spend time and money to explore the potential of a new technology. Subsequent waves of citizens have been increasingly interested in being entertained, whether by -ingo or sexplay or whatever. The population mix is more consumer-heavy than it used to be, and creators are trying to catch the attention of these people, sometimes in the crassest ways imaginable.

The same thing will happen to the TG. The pioneers will always be there, but the population will begin to swell with consumers, and the community will no longer be of a single mind.

It's unfortunate that we lose something intimate as SL grows, but I'd rather be part of a living, evolving process than an endless series of Happy Days episodes, threadbare nostalgia for supposedly better days. People should be allowed to make choices, and explore the effects of those choices in this new medium, even if the choices they make seem sad, ugly, or pointless. (What may seem sad, ugly, or pointless to me may be exciting and liberating to you...that's part of the whole freedom thing too. Multiple points of view.)

I like to have my mind changed, I like to argue, and I like to get pissed off, because all of these things are signs that I am engaged, thinking, and interacting. That's my ideal for the MG, full-blast, 24 hours a day. And if the reverse side of the "adult" coin is immaturity, then that is a price I am happy to pay.

Pol That is the other part I am hearing as well. That one will of course change with time as you stated.

- Run sims on my own server
- Import and rig real 3D models instead of prims
- Code in standard languages
- Be able to form more cohesive groups and niches than the current Group System allows for

Seriously though:

The thing of it is, as Second Life grows, that feeling of intimate interaction should never go away. Likewise, people wanting to do "their own thing" should not need to live in fear, either. Niches and smaller groups should take over.

What I repeatedly point to is the fact we, as a grid, are still living in an informational Stone Age. We're all funneled through the same tired systems (read: Events, Find, etc) with very little opportunity for these to support anything more than "what's popular." The biggest mistake is the fact these still display "All Events/Ads/Etc." If Second Life is going to be supportive of strong niches, LL should embrace better searching technology, like the Google Mini.

We often make the mistake of thinking certain niches simply "cannot (or do not) exist in Second Life." In reality, they need our help. If we're to make an open, free world like the Internet, embracing better information tools is a must. Allowing residents to find what they want and not find what they don't want is really the key here.

That said, and before anyone goes on a campaign saying they, as residents, are doing this (I'm talking to you, Hiro), I think this function will need to be visible, if not integrated, with the Second Life client itself. As time passes, opening up the client is another one of "those things" that will promote information, similar to what competing internet browsers do today.

At the end of the day, our state as a community is reflective both of who we are and what tools are made available to us. By attacking the latter, that "small community in a big world" feeling is and should be quite possible. If it's not, then we as a community need to work to fix the problem.

Jeffery You get my Stamp of Approval. LOL

I am not saying that we SHOULD NOT have the feeling that TG is currently feeling but it just comes to happen that as population grows everything starts to detach. Using the previous game I played again as a reference when I started it was small...I mean like really small. Then it got bigger and it was still ok it had one or two equal areas to sims. Then they added ten sims...and I lost contact with half my friends.

As for the events and other groups I agree that is appears we are assuming way to much and need to rethink things. that is kinda why I am opening this can of worms if you will.

Right now I see only a few differences between TG and MG and most of those are being subdued.
A) "escorting" - Tons of restrictions either by LL or by the various locations.

B) "sex" - Mentioning of the "poses" is allowed but not of event involving this nature unless you hint at it alot. Usually you have to be part of some special group to hear about these. Otherwise they are just spur of the moment. I have been to one that WAS posted on the events list and honestly it was enjoyable, more then 95% of the events I have seen or go to that are currently listed.

C) "Drinks and Drugs" - Beer, pot, etc are seen in MG but not TG not much here needs to be done different.

D) "lanuage" - Not much to advertise here...walk around and qoute the seven words by geaorge carlin all day. This place is pretty much under control outside of griefers and "stupid people"

The thing is, they should not be subdued on the Main Grid. They should just not be readily visible for residents that don't give a care about them (or, arguably, those residents not "allowed" to view them). :)

That's really the core issue here, differences in TG/MG aside.

Personally I'm glad the TG is finally open.

I wasn't a big fan of the idea in the first place, and I still have my misgivings about it.

But the good news is (I hope!) that now LL can stop advertizing SL (main grid) on gaming sites and places that are frequented by the younger set - or switch out those ad with TG ones. Whatever.

Anyhow I had been getting concerned about the perception of SL that was being given out, and for awhile I had a rash of Noobies totally and completely CONFUSED about what the heck they were "supposed to be doing in this game".

No I know that's a pretty standard question and one that Helpers get often, but there was a distinct increase in the influx of folks who came in ready to play SL like there was levels and quests and stuff, and they seemed completely thrown off.

That being said, I doubt however that LL will ever advertize or promote SL as the mature content place that it is. But I would like to see more emphasis on the 18+ only which pretty much sealed the deal for me when I found SL a year ago.

I'm assuming they now have some sort of thingy on the signup page that can direct those underagers trying to sign up towards the TG?

Remember the "No Minors in SL!" cry that went out over the grid? Now they have a place to go. I don't see the MG going in the direction of the TG at all. I love my grown up playground and again I have a sense of relief that SL won't be opened up to children.

Yes but right now they are being subdued and there is a method to reduce it a bit by either removing mature rated events or selecting the various categories. Problem is even now though events are not being posted or planned due to the current rules and/or fear they might get in trouble. One I heard about recently was actually a great idea that was done in my previous game by my friend. In the old game it was a laugh and joy by all and the owner of the game waited with baited berath to see what the results of the event were. Here be it different I had to find out about it by word of mouth and was shocked. The pictures I saw were adult but cute in a strange sense. I won't mention the event only because I am not sure if this particular one wanted to be made public but it is a good example of thigns that are NOT being posted.

I'm not against the Teen Grid. Don't misunderstand me. I think it is a great idea and frankly will suggest it to friends and family who have younger family members.

Exactly I was drawn over from this other game and everyone there understood my personality. I liked three things. Creativity, BDSM approval, and sex. Yes I like intellgent conversation but I don't want it as often as the rest...make it a close fourth. Now I can't talk 24/7, building/creating is causing me issues (I failed stick figure drawing in kindergarden), so that leaves me with two other enjoyments I can do often without having the need to throw my dual monitors out the window in frustration. I was sold on these ideas and yes they are here. Are they as "easy as it sounds" HELL NO. It almost feels like a rip off but it is there and not that bad so I am happy. It would be nice though to see it move more towards the adults playground I heard about. (sorry for the rant)

yes but my understanding was it did not grow cause of the fear of minors coming in cause they had no place to go along with the fact others did not want to see it. Well the teens have a place and frankly if it is a sight thing then maybe something needs to be revamped instead of subduing the ideas completly.
