Non-Stop Questions - Can you Believe this

Yesterday, during a class, I had to respond several times to queries of "are you busy, can you help me with..."

- Yes I'm busy plz with class now is not a good time.

- Ok, when then, I really need help with....etc. can you come out right after.

It put me in a bad mood. I guess word got out that I was not very approachable at that time. Oh if only I had an afk/busy response. I am still boggled by the fact taht somebody actually told this person that I was in a bad mood, but still referred them to me. Talk about passing the buck.

Then, can you believe this:

Q - "Hey"
A - "Hey"
Q - I heard you're in a bad mood. Are you all right?
A - Yes, just the non stop questions are killing me.
Q - Well, I was wondering if you could help me anyway...
A - I don't believe it. You must be joking.
Q - ...and this particle thing...
A - STOP. I am BUSY. You just said you knew I was in a bad mood and I told you it's because of this. STOP IT.
Q. Ok sorry. When will you be free.
A - I don't know. I will let you know if I get some time.
Q - Ok.

* 10 - 15 mins *

Q - Hey
A - WHAT
Q - Still busy?

As it turns out it's not the two story fall that breaks the computer monitor, it's the sudden stop at the end of it.

If you don't see "Liason", please try to remember it's just another player trying to enjoy the game. I'm sure nobody wants to just get mute happy, but what's the alternative?

And then, can you believe many of these people are the ones that walk out of my classes when I annouce the fee, or have never been to any class at all? OR EVEN SEEN THE SCRIPT HELP DOC?

Tcoz.

One of the drawbacks/benefits of being a teacher, mentor, long time resident, high on the leader board or any number of other things, is that people are going to look to you for help. I know it can be frustrating to be in the middle of something and be interrupted by questions, but that’s part of Second Life, and you should feel proud that you COULD help.

Your whole post just gave me, and I’m sure others, the opinion that you don’t want to be bothered helping for free, “just let me teach my for fee classes”. Now I know that your not that type of person, but that’s the image you just projected and a lot of people don’t know you.

If you don’t want to be bothered, stop doing anything remotely associated with any of the activities I mentioned in opening, become a hermit, and script and build your little heart away.

Please don’t take this as an attack on your personally, I’ve heard similar things from other people and you have the misfortune of being the one to post about it.

Tcoz, I overhear a lot of people who ask others whos a good scriptor or builder or something cause they need help. And your name always appears in there somewhere :) Maybe you should refer the person asking to someone else who can help when you don't want to be bothered

That's the reason I don't do classes

I know just where you're coming from, but more importantly I know to stay away from showing people stuff. I don't mind helping people on an individual basis but to show a buncha people something is impossible. You always get 1 person that doesen't understand anything you say and when they do other people need to be reassured about something entirely different. I never took a building class, never a tezxture class or any of that, I expiermented on my own and figured it out myself. I had help from many people too but it was something I didn't bug them about while they were trying to talk to another different group. There is a tutorial which really isn't that helpful but I'm thinking of writing a notecard to help people with this game. Usually it's easier to type out everything and then just hand it out to people then to try answering everyones questions all at once. I just don't like if I've displayed my busy sign while I'm at my building making something and all of a sudden I see the words, such and such wants to exchange cards with you. People, learn to read what something is trying to tell you, I know reading is a fairly new concept to alot of you but try it, it will do wonders for you in alot of situations.

Wow Tcoz that bites :( ppl ppl *shakes head

I remember long ago (hehe just seems long ago only been about a month) when Tcoz showed up at my empty lot and helped me get started with my little purple box i liked to call home :D ....that being said Tcoz is one of the most helpful players in the game. To badger him with b.s. is b.s. let the guy alone already or I will be first in line to help him bump these rude ppl into the outlands hehe and we all know what happens in the outlands don't we ;) hehe

I get asked to help out a lot too not that I am an expert by any means but when your told "sorry i am busy right now" go find a linden or someone else to help ya out. ppl do get busy or they just simply do not feel like helping right that moment. let em be this is their game too.

nuf said :D

Tcoz, I personally want to thank you here for your help last night on the castle. I throughly enjoyed your company with all the information you gave me. I will try to do as you said and spread the knowledge you gave me whenever possible.

Now that my Move is complete I will be able to spend more time in world and a lot of this simple stuff I can learn on my own and if you ever need a place to hide out Come to the castle I am sure I can make a dungeon laboratory for you...;)

Thanks again ShadowWeaver.

My post was undoubtedly overreactive. I like to help and I like to do the classes. Happy to be of service. I still can't believe somebody who knows you are not in the mood for questions, and tells you so, would actually start asking you questions, but that's people for ya.

The afk message would do a lot to help this I think. Hope ya'll get behind that one.

You know maybe there's some money to made here. Maybe if I make myself available for scripting questions (not full script writing) for 50-100 a throw or something, sort of like an event with no linden pay. If you're a scripter please feel free to compete with me on this event I won't fight hard...at all. Take it ;p

That gives me an idea, build a little booth with a window in the front. You stand inside. Someone can walk up and pay the window to open and when it does the person can ask you questions about scripting, but the window is on a timer, so they must pay more if they take too long. Kinda like peep show, but in a good way.
Client: " Hi, I got this problem with object communication..."
Scriptor: "Ok I see your problem you need to" window closes.
Please insert $50 for another minute. lol

Yep, that's how teaching is. I teach RL classes in 3d animation. It's always a challenge to try and balance everyone's needs. You want to help the people who just aren't getting it and you also don't want to waste the time of the people who do and are waiting for you to move on. There comes a point when you have to accept that not everyone's going to make it, and you just have to push them out of the lifeboat and distribute their rations among the others ;)
