I'm not being a hermit on purpose

Really, I'm not.

It's just very hard sometimes to go anywhere in world. The lag I experience when there are lots of objects / scripts / textures / avs nearby is *incredible* -- if I hadn't gotten addicted to SL over a good net connection there's no way I'd be in world now.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer up a public apology of sorts, for not going to many events. It's not because I don't want to! So many of the events I see posted on the calendar and here in the forum look like so much fun -- please know that I'm there in spirit, if not in Av, until my net connection situation gets sorted out.

I dont have a superfast connection (only 128kbps). It takes me a little bit to load up zones and such. The other night at the Social Mixer I had to leave, i was lagging soooo bad and couldnt follow the conversation because I was recieving the messages in the wrong order and such :/

Maybe one day I'll be able to get cable and enjoy SL even more. But right now I am having fun talking with people who happen to fly by the area I hang out in (Hawthorne) :)

Shebang, it might possibly be your graphics card driver. I thought I was having serious lag at first (getting under 1 fps at crowded events), and it turned out to be my graphics driver.

A quick way to test it is to go somewhere were there are no people and few objects (De Haro is nice). Hit Alt-1 to see your frame rate. Then, with no people in camera, see how different a frame rate you get in mouselook mode and normal mode. I found that when my avatar was visible I was getting 9fps, without any avatars visible I got 50fps. Now, at events with 15 avatars visible, you can imagine my frame rate. :-)

So if you're using a GeForce (I'm using Quadro2), try changing to an older version of the driver, specifically v. 41.09.

If that's not it, you could always set up camp in De Haro. The strict building rules there means that there are not too many objects there and it's rarely crowded, but it's a nice place. :)

lol Danny, trust me, she knows about it. Shebang has been with SL quite a long time. The reason she is lagging is because she is connecting via dialup, which isnt much fun.

Danny, thanks so much for your suggestions =) It's absolutely not my drivers or any other software or hardware issue tho -- it's my (lack of) bandwidth.

I mainly just stick around in the Native American Village in Oak Grove -- we're keeping that area very "clean" -- iow, as few objects & scripts as possible -- because that's how we believe the Native Americans kept their villages**. So I mainly just stay there, IM'ing with folks, occasionally wrestling with the building tools, chatting with people who drop in for a visit.

(Swampy -- your connection is almost 3x as fast as mine, but I do understand your pain)

** Yes, we do believe the Native Americans used as few scripts as they could get away with using... =)
