"talk to" is 5m, chat is 20m, and shout is 100m. IM is private with the one your talking too.

Whisper = 10
Say = 20 Shout = 100 Talk To = Weird. It'll sort of automatically change distance based on how far the avatar is from you. It's a completely USELESS thing, btw, and LL should remove it and replace that pie selection with something useful. Like making a raspberry noise. People'd use that more often. _____________________

I would like to point out that IMs are only "private" as far as average users are concerned. Lindens can and do read your IMs. So if you are in IM with someone and feel like giving away some info that would break the ToS, dont do it.

This came up at the welcome area this morning. There was some debate about the distances and today we discovered that chat was 22m and shout was 102m. Not a lot of difference in the 20m and 100m, but it tested that way this morning.
I agree "talk to" is sort of pointless. I guess it is good if your on your land and you want a less likely chance of being heard by your neighbors, but it bugs me that it freezes me into position and cant move around while it is enabled. IM is better if you dont want to be over heard. _____________________

If you're stood in the center when you shout then it near enough is... but it is limited to 100m.
