If you participate in competitions (including build and av contests, scripting contests, games, skills, quizzes etc...) what are your main motivations?

I don't really enter contests but I will visit a Show and Tell event now and then that awards prizes. I go because I like seeing what new people come up with. I don't usually make friends this way, but it interests me I'm not interested in building contests because I think they're boring. I also think most av contests are boring unless it's about something you created yourself. Quizzes I'm awful at, and I always feel bad about taking money if it's awarded to me because I don't really need it (like Primtionary, for instance, which in my opinion doesn't need to award cash prizes -- and that's not really a contest, I guess).

I haven't entered any for a long long long time - but when I started there used to be a lot of building and speed building contests, show and tells, and stuff like that. I used to enter those a fair bit mainly to see what other people were doing and to pit myself against the people who's work I admired. Plus it was always cool to see how people got around various problems. Siggy.

Money. No question about it. I'm always scrounging around trying to come up with my "rent."
But - I only enter those games and contests that I enjoy, and I also enjoy the socializing.

I haven't entered many contests, but the ones I have entered are mainly for the challenge. Or it just sounded like fun... like the Mythic Miniatures build contest I entered. Same reason I like playing Primtionary. Its a fun challenge. Or something. Oh yeah, or for the pecan pie.

I've entered just one contest. Knowing sales were trending down for that month, I wanted a little something to pad the Second Wallet. I won, so I got what I needed.
