Hard limit of 20 AVs in a sim? True?

I found this tidbit in a recent thread on lag ( /108/40/62023/1.html). From post number 4 in that thread: From: someone ...The simulator your event was in, likely had a large number of avatars connected to it. This means there are up to 20 people (main grid sim limit) requesting information from the simulator, which caches data locally, in a squid proxy, this squid proxy requests data from the Agni asset server, as a high importance request, if that data's not cached locally... Can anyone verify this 20-person limit? Do other AVs get barred from entering a sim that already has 20 AVs in it? I looked all over Wiki and did forum searches but this is the first mention I've seen of this particular figure. If it's true, any idea whether this limit is changing in the 1.7 patch, since they did some optimizations to reduce script lag?

We used to be able to teleport more people in and make it a real party. I've seen sims with 70+ folks in them. However, LL corrected that loophole and now the most you can squeeze in is 40, give or take a couple.

Aye - the magic number is indeed 40. Sometimes you can reach 41 if people TP in with just the right timing - but AV entrance is clamped at 40.

Great, thanks. I thought that number seemed a bit low.

At the recent auction, the sim had avatars numbering in the low 40's and movement was difficult. The sim was taken down and put on the best server which was able to accomodate just over 50 with better (not great) performance. I think that 20 was being put out as a number at which you can expect to experience lag.

A sim-based world functions best when people are evenly spread across the map. Of course that'll never happen. It is possible now to carry on parties at multiple locations with cameras, streaming video, shared music streams and repeaters for the general chatter.
Unless you just had to be looking someone in the face, you'd not necessarily realize they were at one of the party locations fifteen sims away. And if y'all did need to talk a moment, you could both stand in front of the respective cameras and chat; or one could TP the other. I imagine people would be location hopping pretty regularly. Such an event could easily host several hundred people.
There could be quite a reputation for people who organized and hosted megaparties. Stop kicking me! Nobody told me this was a corporate secret. No, You go jump in a lake. Uhuh. Yeah.

I remember the Punany Club packing in 60+ with no crash IIRC. Schwanny would be the one to verify. However that was a private island sim.

Yeah, private island owners can set their own limit; although when you get into the big numbers, the likely hood of the server going under increases dramatically.

Drift, Cua, and myself have been working on a project at a 4 corners region. When we first bought the parcels we did a flash mob thing and had just over 100 avs in the same proximity. In theory, we can have 160 avs there at one time. Anybody want to do a flash mob there and see if we can break another sl record? Be really neat to sit in the same room w/ 160 avs.

20 is the general number in a region at which you begin to notice, "Uh... down it goes!"

I remember the recent Burning Life tour led by Hamlet Linden. I had the mini-map open on the side and it was really interesting seeing this in action. At the beginning there was a high density of green blips centered around Hamlet, with an invisible square surrounding us defined by the blips that couldn't get in. Then as Hamlet move on, some of those blips would get there first, and some of us blips would bounce off the invisible wall. Other blips would second-guess Hamlet's next move and fly around the box in that direction to get their chance. It added a nice bit of challenge-and-reward to an already interesting tour

When Avalon was brand new it was opened briefly with absolutely nothing there, just flat ground surrounded by water. It was the second private estate (2nd to Caymen) that was seperate from the grid. It was a real oddity.
We had a spontaneous gathering and we all started teleporting in as many people as we could. We finally crashed the sim with 82 avatars. That was only avatars, no builds or wild attachments. Fun times.
