Hi folks. I will be outta the game for a while. I updated my drivers off of the XP update site, and now my comp won't work. Can't get in, it just goes in a loop rebooting itself.

Gack. Use the manufacturer's own drivers.. they're usually far more up-to-date than the packaged Windows Update ones

Sucks to be you...
The worst part is that in about a week you will get random lockups and crashes when the automatic updater tries to engage... Just kidding (I don't even have pro) _____________________
BTW
WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS! |

No problems with Pro here
![]() You might want to check for unnecessary services. Pro comes with a bunch of extra stuff that home users generally don't need to have running (which begs the question of why upgrade... unless like me you needed the more flexible network file sharing) _____________________

Actually, I have XP Home. I think the driver upgrade for my K7 processor chip screwed me.

I don't have XP in front of me at the moment, but the place you want to look is in Control Panel (Classic view), Administrative Tools, Services. Look for items that are started/automatic and think about whether they're needed. (But be careful... if you disable the wrong things it can go nuts)
There seems to be a reasonable guide to the services here: http://www.uksecurityonline.com/husdg/windowsxp/disableservices.htm There was a better site somewhere, but it's in my bookmarks at home (at work ATM) _____________________

1. I can't get to the control panel. The comp reboots itself way before that.
2. It appears it may not be the drivers after all. It seems that when I upgraded the drivers, and then had to reboot the machine to finish loading them, that my graphics card decided to use this opportunity to kick the bucket. So, getting a new card. Gonna get a GForce FX 5950 with 256 megs. Should have it by Wednesday. so, hopefully will see y'all then if withdrawl doesn't kill me first. _____________________

![]() The new card will do you wonders... I'm still kicking myself for only getting a 128MB model. _____________________
