I just had the inspiration to ask this but...what would things be like if Photoshop (and other such programs with closely related features) just never became invented and wanted to ask these ways. (or if you have to think of if your lifetime had been born before Photoshop came around)

Yes these are broad questions but i want them to be as open to thought and not just some questionaire.

- If you use Photoshop regularly: What do you think you would be doing instead?

- If you 'create' using photoshop as a personal profession (bassically anything more than a hobby): Where would you be today?

- (for everyone) What would the internet be without Photoshop? (and if your feeling really upto the challenge what would the 'world' be without Photoshop)

Interesting questions.

I use Photoshop daily in the course of my work as a multimedia designer for a major medical school.

Without Photoshop, I think the web would not exist as it does today. I think the internet would have remained a tool for academics to exchange information (almost exclusively text or binaries) and would never have evolved into the commerical entity it is today.

Personally, I do not know what I'd be doing. I came to do multimedia development through an interest in art and computers combined with an interest in education. I would probably would have been a programmer (if I had taken the computer route) or a fine artist or textbook illustrator.

Hard to say exactly, but I am sure my life would be totally different.

Thanks Adobe! :D

A long time ago in a graphically deprived universe far far away ...

Well before Photoshop, and other computer graphics programs, I did stuff the old-fashioned way.

I painted, I drew, I sculpted, I made clothes (costumes mostly), I made props, I Stage Managed, Called shows, ran lights, sound, spfx, I wrote and editing other's work. I took pictures that I had to get right on the first try since I didn't ahve the money nor know how to use a dark room to fix things.

I still do some of those things from time to time.

So, without Photoshop et. al., I'd be playing solitaire on the computer wishing I could do neat graphics on it (beleive me I spent a lotta time thinking about it back in the days of DOS and the limited stuff I had on my MAC II (no hard drive, can you believe it?). I'd occasional do text graphics, just as an exercise in futility (once a year at best).

At one time, WordPerfect actually had some pretty killer graphical features, then it got blended w/Corel and CorelDraw AND WordPerfect went from being my favs to being betamaxed out of useful market predomenince. Tragic.

I'd probably still be in school but maybe more focused on literary stuff than graphics, maybe. Might of been photography instead. So not too too different. Just different tools for much the same results.

Aaah the days of rubber cement, an eXacto knife and a self-healing board! Such fun! :D

We still have that in scrapbooking. Nonetheless, some years back, I started thinking scrapbooking may get replaced totally by computer scrapbooking, in that the resultant pages actually LOOK like printed pages.

So when Chrissy got her computer, for all my trouble in researching and putting it together for her - when we got to the part about extra programs, there was a deal for Scrapbook Factory Deluxe cheaper than elsewhere. So I got it. And was HOURS last night just trying to see everything in it. Which will take days. Looks like a lot of fun!

I have no Photoshop. I'm always in life doing without whatever it is everybody else has until two years after everyone else has already gotten it, so I figure Photoshop will be the same way. Cept maybe it will be more like four years after everyone else has it.

However, since Christmas, I do now have a digital camera, and the Kodak program that came with it. I love my digital camera!

I seem to remember WordPerfect being a pretty good way to make newsletters, cards, and stuff, then somehow - it stopped being a pretty good way.

I would be forced to start drawing in sketchbooks again, and taking pictures of what I actually wanted, instead of what I could use to make what I wanted.

First, I remember using Autodesk Animator, I still miss using that program. I would be using any program in existance with the most tools, effects, ect... But you said "or programs with the same functionality" so I still would be using the best program I could find. I like using the computer, electricity is a heck of a lot cheaper than oil-paints or watercolors:P

As long as I can still use a scanner, I'd draw whatever I wanted, scan it in and color it in the computer at least. I think the internet wouldn't be much different, to be honest. Not that it's not a great program, it definitely gets the job done - I just think that people will always find new ways to do things - and there would always be another photo editing program. I didn't WANT to use Photoshop because I was used to using Paint Shop Pro, about 5 years ago. And while I use it a fair amount today, If they came out with a program that had all the features of Flash and Photoshop, I'm sure I'd start using that.

I went to college for film and video production, photography, and visual arts. This was back in the mid 80's and there were no classes in digital anything. I didn't encounter tools for doing digital art until the early 90's and it completely changed the course of my career and life. Had those things not been invented I'd probably be using similar skills but using different tools, and likely not enjoying it nearly as much :)

Had Photoshop not existed, it's pretty realistic to say that alternatives would in most respects. I happen to be a GIMP user, myself, and while the GIMP and PSP emulate Photoshop in many ways, few would never have existed without Photoshop itself. Most are pretty common sense.

On another note, several art tools preceeded Photoshop that were indeed quite powerful. We have a working Amiga that has several old paint tools, and were enough for some fairly professional artwork.

That said, assuming for a moment that we removed all professional art tools from the world, the Internet would indeed have remained a medium for newsgroups, email, and elites. As stated above, it would have not grown into the popular culture it is today.

But really, that's due to several technical advancements tying together to form what it is today. You could remove any one of them, and the Internet would die just that much more in where it is today.

Where would I be? Probably art school, instead of taking a computer major. My interest in computing is driven by my interest in art, especially 3D sculpting/model design.

Wait. That was too disturbing. I can do something funny. Yes. Try this one.

If photoshop had never existed I'd be tossing little cans of paint at images on my computer screen.

Nope. Funny is not working for me tonight. I guess I'll just stick with morose.

If photoshop had never existed I'd still be burying people alive. If you think you couldn't hear people scream from six feet underground, you'd be mistaken.

I'd be using deluxe paint 4 - or photon paint.

Or just programming.

I'd still be getting paint all over my hands, on my face, in my hair, and in locations that I would swear that my paintbrush never even got near, just to produce works that maybe had some spark of creativity (depending on who you asked) but were technically hopelessly inept.

I took years of art classes before Photoshop was released, but pixels were the first medium I tried that ERASED completely! And I could experiment for DAYS without paying a single cent for materials (beyond the electric bill).

Frankly, I wish Photoshop would be supplanted. Many of its features are too oblique even for experienced users, the interface tends to have a steep learning curve, and it's not really "tuned" for fine art... plus it's gawdawful expensive. But until something better comes along (yeah, yeah, I can hear all the Paintshop fans from here), it's my medium.

Photoshop did not exist when I was in college, so I took pictures on my non-digital camera using black and white film and I developed them. I went to law school where i did not ever have to use photoshop. I guess I enjoy photgraphy more with photoshop, as its something i can do in limited space with limited set up and materials costs. But really I would survive quite nicely without it.

I went through college for graphic design during a transitional phase going from paper comps and mechanicals to starting to use Pagemaker and Photoshop. So if they weren't around (and I assume you also mean DTP programs) I'd be fingerless from cutting up acres of rubylith with X-acto knives. And probably doing editorial design instead of web interface design. Fingerless.
