SEATTLE — San Francisco doesn't charge extra for sourdough bread, and Chicago doesn't single out deep-dish pizza.
But here in Seattle, where the trademark food product is dark, rich coffee, voters will decide Tuesday whether to tax espresso drinks 10 cents a cup. Supporters say the tax on lattes, mochas and cappuccinos — but not drip coffee or tea — will raise money for early childhood programs and higher salaries for day care workers.
Opponents staged a Boston Tea Party-style rally Sept. 7. They threw imitation sacks of coffee into Green Lake in north Seattle to fight the "latte tax.
