just wondering what the rule is for attacking someone in the outlands.

i was just standing on top of my property talking to someone when i got killed. it wasn't too much of a hassle for me cuz i spawned just few feet away from where i died but my friend got killed and that caused her SL to crash. and of course this happened after the server closed...

so anywayz... is the outland just like the good old wild wild west? where people are left to fend for themselves? and r there any defensive structures that i can put up from getting sniped while i am in my own property?

"Unsafe Land" such as the Outlands
03-26-2003 15:20
JinDokGhe -

The outlands and other "unsafe land" (where you can see a heart meter on in the bottom of your screen) is generally accepted to be more permissive - see the Community Standards for info. The action you described would be permissible - if unpopular - in the Outlands.

Fully unsafe spaces such as the Outlands are rare in Second Life. More common are individual land owners setting their space as "unsafe" in order to raise the stakes for dueling, etc.

As for Defensive Measures - i hear some residents have some pretty sophisticated stuff - perhaps some will chime in on this thread.

There are clear warnings posted on the perimeter wall as you enter The Outlands, so I think it's pretty much anything goes.

Which in many regards is very cool, but when you have some idiot flying around minigunning random people, it's not so cool.

I know exactly who it was that got you, because they got me too, and no doubt countless others in the area.

Response from the person was "heh, I'm bored"... so go figure.

I'm not sure on this one, but I think you could probably set your land to be "safe" and it might neutralise the effect of any bullets hitting you while on that land. Haven't tested it myself yet though. (Can our personal land override the global setting of The Outlands sim if we want?).

One thing I'm pretty sure of is that I am gonna put something together to defend myself and those in or around my own buildings, and it won't be one of those stupid red miniguns.

Think somewhere along the lines of a perimeter & username based defense system. Anyone on your black list coming within a certain distance of your place gets zapped. Dunno if it's possible at this point, but I'll sure have some fun finding out. :)

K. Scratch that safe land idea. I just tried it and it doesn't do anything. The land was actually safe by default. The sim "unsafe" setting overrides our personal land setting.

Back to the drawing board. :)

I built a bunker, thats my home, not totally attractive but the walls help...you can set your land to allow noone else to build on it, that will stop bullets from generating from said shooters gun from your land, don't think it'll stop bullets fired from outside that land though.

Not to be flamed for the question...and I myself (to my knowledge) only shoot people I know, but why would you choose to buy/build in the outlands to be safe?

A bunch of us (friends) started shooting each other, 15 minutes later a group of the neighbors wandered over and started blazing away...did anyone care, not really, we assumed as much was possible when we moved here, and also it turned out to be one of the best times I've had so far.

of course i knew the outland was going to be dangerous but it was still annoying to be gunned down while chatting with someone. i am not crying foul at whoever killed me nor am i complaining for getting attacked. i just wanted to know the rules of engagement out in the outlands and perhaps learn how to defend my home from further attacks. just because someone is allowed to kill me doesn't mean i should shut up and just take the bullets, right?

and as for defending myself... i dont want ugly turrets around my home.. or more destructive weapons... the idea of defending myself with more guns sound silly to me. is there a way to erect a force field around my land where i can allow avatars to move in and out but stop any other projectiles? or has the ability to recognize certain avatars and prevent anything from that person from entering the force field?

No, of course not.

You could build something like that around your whole place, set it to be almost completely transparent, and have it react to voice commands from you that would change it. For example, a command to activate the shield would make it "solid" and possibly have some kind of script on it that caused things colliding into it to be repelled away again, or if it was a person give them some damage, or straight kill them, who knows.

Then another voice command to de-activate it which would simply make the whole object, or a doorway portion of it, into a "phantom" object allowing people to pass through it.

Only real downside is you have to deactivate to let people in, then reactivate once they're safely inside, and with that you're always gonna run the risk of the griefer getting inside too. (Plus there are other ways of getting inside unfortunately, for the more diligent griefer).

Oh, and not to mention whatever it would cost to build a giant forcefield structure and the land it resides on, heh.

But yeah... I've been thinking about such a system, if only to be able to say "yeah, I've built one of those and it did/didn't work".

I could meet up with you in-game tonight if you like and we could test out a couple of things? Lemme know.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, i've been thinking about all the battling that seems to be going on around our lil place, and i was wondering, couldn't we just band together and create some kind of security system together, instead of separate?

Or something else maybe don't know hehe.

Oh and i had a question, is it normal for when people are shooting, to create so much lag? Not sure if thats more of a technical question.

Just curious :)

hehe... maybe we could build robots that patrol our local area (in a similar way to the helicopter that flies around), tracking down trouble makers and zapping them. :)

well normally the system only has to track our static objects, houses, trees, etc.. and us flying around of course.. but everytime someone fires one of those miniguns (which shoot a whole ton of bullets very quickly), the system then has to track the position of each one of those bullets flying through the air, and whether it hits something or not, and what to do if it hits something, etc, etc, etc.. and it has to do all those calculations for every single person in the area.. with more people, it gets exponentially more troublesome..

etc. etc. etc. :)

Nah, never meant at all to just take it and be quiet, just that such a thing out that way could probably be expected...and again I don't do flyby's so not condoning the behavior, just agreeing that it can happen easily, probably in this area than any other.

I'd help with any security system build myself, but couldn't script to save my life...hell I was happy when I made myself look like I'm wearing combat boots, but might possibly be willing once a decent system is underway to perhaps help with funding for the process.

ahhhh okie, i wasn't sure if it was just me or not, cause last night i couldn't even fly properly hehe, but it could have been cause it was after hours too, so i wasn't sure :)

thanks deee

Just curious, does anyone know who is doing the shooting in that area. The only 2 times I have been killed unexpectedly was while passing over that area between Deeblue's house and Dana Crash's place

Just curious if you have IDed the sniper.

Seems to be in your area.

as far as a forcefield reacting to specific avatars contact bbc, he has just the thing. It can also stop people you don't want on your land. You just bump into it and it recognises your av name and determines if it lets you past. Otherwise it acts as a wall.

As far as enemy kill list guns (selective shooting) contact Xavier. I can demo his guns if you would like. Him and I modified the original guns to be able to "wear" the guns. But Im not inclined to have everyone wear auto killing guns. That would be a mess. But a perimeter gun that selectivly shoots certain targets is already in world. They can also be made transparent so as to not uglify your property and also be sneaky. They wont know what hit em lol.

I have both versions, the stationary and wearable. Also I have 2 types of gun control units.

1. based on a friends list (kills everyone but who you enter as friends.)

2. based on enemy list ( kills only those you list as an enemy.)

Charlie,

Obviously I'm gonna be working on my own stuff, but any information I can get from existing working systems would be a help. If I find you in-game tonight to grab a copy of the stuff you mentioned, will it be locked so I can't modify it, or will I be able to edit/modify it to suit my own needs ?

Just wondering.

that force field sounds exactly like what i had in mind... although like deeblue said, i want to make my own instead of just buying it. i can make it now that i know its possible.

and as for who is shooting... i heard a name being mentioned couple of times but i have yet to see this person killing anyone so i can't be sure.

The stuff I mentioned is not my creation so I cant give or sell them. But I can reffer you to the creators.

Guns are Xavier VonLeanord's

Forcefield type door thing (lol don't know the name of it) is BuhBuhCuh Fairchild's

I can demo the guns but I don't have the forcefield thing.

Also BBC has a personal teleporter that will teleport people off of your land..

I've seen a couple of teleporter objects scattered around the place, but as far as I can tell (and I'm sure someone is gonna prove me wrong real quick because I didn't do THAT much research into it) they can only teleport you to your "Home" location. Is that correct ?

So... what I witnessed was a griefer picking a place to cause some havoc, and simply setting that area as his/her "Home" before doing anything. When people retaliate in defense, killing the griefer, the griefer re-appears instantly only a few meters away from where they were shot.

So teleporting them away, provided that you can only teleport a person to their "Home" location isn't really that useful for this application.

I'm really just guessing you can only teleport home since sending them elsewhere would circumnavigate the normal teleportation fees, and if you could do that, everyone would be taking advantage of that and we'd have heard WAY more about custom teleportation objects by now.

Blah blah blah :)

It teleports them home if it kills them... If not, they end up in one of the new sims, I believe.

Hmmm... interesting. Too bad we don't really have any control over the destination location.

It seems sort of strange to hear people who built their homes in a battle area complain about being shot. I started my house in that area too, but fortunately someone warned me what that section was for before I had gotten too far along.

As far as force fields etc. Might I recommend an "airlock" system. A hall with two doors that react to different commands from the owner. that way you can let your friends into the "airlock" and once they are in there alone open the inner door without fear of an undesirable slipping in.

If would be interesting if most of the residence of the battle zone banded together to form an airlocked non-violent sub-community. Just a thought.

Kinda what I was getting at but hey, build where ya want...if ya wanna build a defense system too, I get shot a lot so as said would probably contribute to the effort...hell I've been shot so many times that on more than on one occasion as I was killed and respawning into my home, I died 6 more times (meter got to halfway mark and started over) because I'd get shot on my starting point.

As this is beta...perhaps a 30 second timer of being untouchable when arriving within SL would solve that...I don't mind being shot so much as it's annoying starting to re-emerge into my "home" point several times before successful <---spelled that wrong didn't I

When I built my little "A" frame in the Outlands, the ONLY other person past the wall was Zoli. I knew the Outlands was a "damage" area, but at the time, I didn't fully understand what I was getting into. Also, not being an avid on-line gamer, this is my first one, I didn't know that people would randomly fly by and shoot you where you stand. Fortunately that has only happened to me once.

However, in answer to Mac’s question/statement, I built there for the same reason others build there, space. So you say why don’t I move? My “little” home has over 400 primitives, most of which are not linked, AND, I love my view, I love the mountain behind me, and I love my forest. No where else will give me that.

So please, don’t just assume that because someone built in the Outlands, they are wearing a big sign that says “shoot me”.
