Relay For Life was just last month... throughout all of August. Second Lifers raised a LOT of money. It ended at the end of August. Not but a few hours later, Katrina hit. I expected that we would band together - somewhat - but that after Relay For Life, a lot of people would be burnt out. BOY WAS I WRONG! The amount of energy and INCREDIBLE work people are doing to raise money to help our brothers and sisters on the gulf coast is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.Its moments like this that make be TRULY PROUD to be a Second Life citizen and to be part of this community... to be friends with many of you, to work with many of you, to goof off with many of you. The outpouring of support and generosity to help the people going through hell right now has been NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING. I stand in awe of the community. We got mobilized completely before Bush had even stopped vacationing! It is true, we often tend to focus on the drama, the negative, what might go wrong... ...but let's NEVER forget how much we can accomplish when we all work together to make the world a better place! Y'all are doing us proud. Regards, -Flip

I maintain that I suck, and am a total asshat. I will defend this position to the death

And thank you FlipperPA for handling the donations that are coming into the kiosk in Waterhead. As soon as I asked Pathfinder who would be the person to handle a task like this, he didn't hesitate in saying it was under control because FlipperPA Peregrine was on the job!

Dude, I'm so grateful for the opportunity to donate my L$ funds for this cause. I'm a little pinched right now, but I had plenty of L$ I could dip into to help. You da man for facilitating this. Can you disclose the amount of donations that have thus far rolled in?

Yay residents! SL does have an amazingly generous and nice group of people willing to help out more often than not.
Where/how can I donate money?

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Is this the place next to the Waterhead Community Center / sometimes welcome area, or am I overlooking a display right at the linden owned sometimes welcome area ? The exact cordinates are Waterhead (112,22). You'll see it right on the water next to the fishing area. And to answer Enabran's question, so far L$225K has been raised.

That is the place I made my contribution at. If anyone's looking for the place, I'd describe it as right next door to the Waterhead telehub complex.
The object is owned by David Jacobs, and a message says the donated money is forwarded to Kasie Costello. The object is deeded to a group called "Katrina Relief".
There was a hundred and twenty thousand households without power in the metro area where I live, and we were a good ways up the coast and somewhat off the path of the storm, where the wind speeds maxed out at 80 mph or so.
The trees that fell here could easily have crushed the apartment buildings and killed or injured the tenants. A higher than average percentage of the tenants in the complex are infirm in one fashion or another, and were almost certainly at home at the time of the storm's passage. If the trees had landed in a slightly different place, there is a real high chance the buildings they would have crushed would have had occupants. We were lucky here compared to what might have happened with just a little change in how the winds gusted and I suppose how the weight on the trees was distributed.
There are several tenants in the complex on respirators, and the resident manager managed to get the power company to give the complex a top spot in the restore power list, so we were only without power for two days or so. My understanding is that large parts of the city are still without power. I'm not driving around to see, not with two hour or longer waits at the gas stations and the traffic lights not working.
I'm real lucky so far as getting about, I live on the same block where my job is, and walk to work. There is a grocery store on the same block also, and it got opened with generators before the power got restored. The power at my work place never even went out. The grocery store is closing early now, and there are gaps on the shelves where some items are sold out, but there's plenty of what you need to stay alive and sufficiently comfortable. If you can get to it and have any money.
