Returning Items

Some items I have purchased have a return option when I right click on them. Exactly what happens if I use this? Do I get all or some of my money back? I made a very unwise purcase a few days ago when I first started in SL. I was instantly unhappy when I realized what I had done, but I only recently noticed the return option. Of course, if I am not going to get some of my money back, it would make no sense to return it.

Return just returns it to your inventory.

Return returns objects that are over your land to whoever owns them, which may or may not be you.

Thanks Huns, that makes sense. I have seen it for some items, but not others. When I clicked return it said something like "Do you really wish to return this item to its owner?" I guess I was hopeful there was some kind of return policy. Ah well.

Thanks for your help,

you might consider IMing the person selling the item you bought, explaining what happened, and asking for a refund. Everyone's policies on that arent the same, but many creators will do refunds. :)

Not being rude but pointing out the obvious I guess...if you buy it you own it if you return it its going in your inventory somewhere.

I take it from your response you think my question was unreasonable.

In real life, we usually get a better chance to judge what we are buying before we commit the cash (I can try on a jacket or take a car for a test drive). And, in real life if I make a bad purchase decision, there is usually some kind of recourse.

That being said, I am not looking for any changes to SL. The logistical problems in implementing, for example, a 3-hour return policy with a 25% restocking fee, would be enormous. Monies would have to be held in escrow before they could be paid to the seller. And I can think of several ways to abuse a policy like this.

Still, I think my question was fair.

Persephone, could it be that you played in There where you could get refunds or partial refunds (depending on how long you'd owned the item) on items bought directly from There? If that's the case, I can understand how the "return" button in SL could be confusing.

As Nephilaine said, contact the seller from whom you made the purchase you now regret to find out his/her return policy. Be warned, however, that some vendors in SL may have a no-return policy.

If an item is sold "No Transfer", for example, many sellers will not give refunds - and understandably! This could lead to considering scamming. However, the nice thing about No Modify / No Transfer items is that you can have the item in many different outfits and configurations. :-)

No, I have never played There. I think the "Return" option was confusing because most of the time there is a "Take" option that does much the same thing (not exactly, but I think you see what I am saying). I was just wondering what Return would do before I tried it.

I am really not worried about my purchase at this stage. It's a minor point. But I did want to get clarification on the Return option.

As an aside, I am also an EVE Online player. They have very sophisticated online economic system. In EVE, player-scammers will put out "sell orders" at $1,000,000 for items that are really only worth $1. The idea is that unsuspecting players not paying attention may accidentally buy these items from you ... and voila ... instant riches. EVE implemented a warning system when you go to buy something for significantly over the current regional market value. But these warnings come up so often that its really easy to just click through them and get scammed.

Guys, please stop harrassing the poor newbie. She asked a newbie question. So what? When I first joined, I had no idea that objects could be copied, or why sometimes objects would disappear from my inventory when I rezzed them while other times they didn't.

BE NICE.
