From the Buzz forum in There, in regards to the changes made to the front of SecondLife.com showing the population and transatcion amounts:

The Linden's unzip, reach in, and throw it right out on the table
= - THUD - =

Some funny highlights:

You can hate SL all you want, but if you don’t respect them for throwing it out there, then I don’t know what to tell you.

Will they pull it if numbers start declining significantly? Well DUH, of course they will. They are not idiots. It called Marketing. Accentuate the positive, play down the negative. Sell the sizzle, not the steak.

Would you expect to see a headline on SL's web site that read "Come to SL and walk like you have a stick up your a ss"?

Remember when their front page featured that pretty girl, half of her face was a real photo and the other half her avatar, looking almost identical. That was genius! Do you think they would have put a disclaimer saying, "Oh BTW, it took 5 days straight to get this avatar to look like the RL person?"

Thanks for posting that, Cris; I hadn't been to There forums for quite a while and I haven't logged into There for... oh, probably eight months or so. (Wow, There forums look like crap on Firefox, love that IE-preferred interface -- not.)

In that thread, someone named Peter_B posted an interesting question about how the transaction amounts listed on the SL main page are measured. He postulated that trading money between a main account and an alt, or even the deposit of our stipends in our accounts on Tuesday, could potentially be counted into those transactions. I wonder if that's true.

(And is Peter_B a There employee? Is he Baloo? I can't remember now.)

Beryl,

I haven't been back either, someone pointed it out to me. I was however bored enough to go back to TSO last night for awhile lol. The questions about the transaction number is interesting, I found this as well, which I missed the first time:

From the thread:
I am a little confused by the Transactions today (US$) on SL's page. I thought they didn't sell L$ or put a monetary value on them.

Is that number based on people trading L$? If I am in SL and give someone 100 L$ and then they give them back to me, does that count for 200 L$ worth of transactions?

Is it a measure of the gambling, or detachable penis sales? Or is it a measure of the money people are giving to SL beyond the costs of the $9.99 lifetime membership?

I just dont understand what that metric is supposed to represent other that how fast SL can drain your funds beyond the $9.99 membership. Or is it how much money SL members are making off of being members of SL?

explain the benefit of that number and what the heck it is measuring.

what seems to amuse me most about there. most of them complain about sl or say how much they hated it here when they tried it but they seem to watch us closely i dont get it?is there something im missing here?
when alot of them came this way on black friday they were only here for a total of most about a 1/2 hour. not giving anything a chance and every once in awhile you will see a SL thread start in the forums .. again . im totally missing the plot here but then again . i never said i was the most intelligent person you will meet :p

Fanfolks are like that... us Second Lifers are the same way... ever notice how we pishposh any game that's even remotely like SL? :)

The There folks are a bit more paranoid, though... there used to be organized "raids" of SL users going in and trying to get folks to give SL a shot... apparently we did it so much in Activeworlds that the mere mention of "second life" gets you automatically banned at their welcome center :D That kinda stuff doesn't really happen any more, I think the perception is that There is wobbling on its last legs.

I never did get a concise userbase number from them, either...

Heh, I'd hardly call James' and Darwin's hare-brained forays into There to recruit for SL "organized." :p

I tried There out of boredom yesterday. Immediatley upon arriving, I was surrounded by members of a local mafia, apparently trying to recruit. Was the most entertaining part of the whole experience. I told them I was from the Justice Department, sent into There to clean up the mafias, then proceeded to ask them if they knew where i could find any.

Other then that, it seemed boring as hell. It cost money to change clothes, money to change your avatar, money for anything and everything.

Drove around in a dune buggy (Thanks April) and that was pretty fun. vehicle control and smootheness is great.

But overall..it was desolate...empty land as far as the eye could see, with only an occasional, usually very simple or crude, dwelling.

I tried There for about 5 days intensely, so almost a week.

My conclusion: there are some great things in there that could be applied to SL to make the gridverse even better! :D

My guess would be it's just a count of L$ moving between accounts. It probably includes money moving between alts, but I doubt it includes LL transactions like stipends. So whatever amount of money has changed hands divided by the current exchange rate. Just a guess.

being curious myself, i did a little math the other night. based on Cory's(?) earlier comment that av-to-av transactions were averaging US $80 per month, and rounding down to 25,000 total (cuz i felt like it), the monthly total amount was approx US $67,000. that's in the same ballpark as the US $70k+ amount i saw at the late hour i did my numbers.

not saying they're correct. and consider it surprising tbh. a more definitive breakdown would be nice.

I left There when the Beta ended, and came to SL.

I can't imagine how depressed I'd be if I'd stayed in There and been Just Another Random-Traited Humie Face.

Ever since I shed that skinny, pink, featherless hide, I've been a whole new bird. :p
