Just a warning to all sl players, it seems that sl 1.010 isnt exactly compatible with antialiasing (all kinds)

This is just a warning, because ever since I played sl with it on, my sl is crashing once every 30 minutes.

But dont worry, a friend said this will be fixed in 1.1 (That friend IS a linden).

Also, (i didnt want to make two threads) it seems i accidently had an a30 machine gun for sale for about a day at 0 dollors, and it seems someone is selling them, if you sell the weapon, and i find out, you will be sued (linden dollors of course) seeing as the script is protected by patent.

If you sell a locked object (for any price, even $0) the buyer doesn't have the ability to access the scripts or resell the item.

Why you have to manually lock something before selling it to protect your IP (that's intellectual property in this context) is beyond me. You'd think it would be like that by default, else why sell the thing to begin with? It creats a situation in which someone else can take something you slaved over for hours, rebadge it as their own, and profit from your labor without forwarding you a dime.

I hope these things will be far less ambiguous in 1.1.

Ah, Intellectual Property. Yes. Because whatever idea you have or script you make, is precious, unique and irreplaceable. Yes, yes. There would definitely not be any possibility that someone else could just as well come up with it by themselves so we must protect those precious few people who can actually have ideas and type a few lines of code. No, sir, that would be impossible.

Would you care to explain your position? It seems like you are making a veiled accusation, although I can't tell whether it's against me or against scripters in general. Of course your trollish reputation precedes you by a mile, but I'll give you the benefit of a doubt.

Read Antagonistic Protagonist's posts on the scripting forums regarding software patents and you will see where I'm getting at.
Or heck just read the entire GNU and EFF websites while you're at it.
When you're done you might want to get a slashdot account and read it on a daily basis. That's where I'm getting at.
Oh and lets not forget Lawrence Lessig's excellent dissertation on copyrights, their excessive length, and harmful impact on the world. It's available both as text and mp3 on the O'Reilly website.

Edit:

Though if you search for lessig you will find more excellent articles.

I have benefitted greatly from GPL'd software. I support the efforts of programmers who give away their work. But that doesn't mean you have to be opposed to proprietary code.

I view intellectual property as being something you have created with the resources of your mind, something that is not tangible physical property, even if it may be stored on something physical. I am not opposed to open source and I think patents and copyrights in general should be severely limited. No one creates anything in a vacuum, we are all influenced by past works and synthesize them into current works. The current "Life of the author plus thirty years" reasoning is offensive to me.

However, a person should have a right to keep their intellectual property to themselves if they want. Programmers and modellers should have a right to earn money from their endless hours of toil, or at the very least, to have their works protected from theft by others. When someone buys your object and rifles through it and DELIBERATELY hacks it so the property sheet says they are the original creator, that's offensive. When they put it on sale without consulting with you it's ten times worse, and of course you can expect them to keep 100% of the profits.

There's a big diffrence between intelectual property and the bright idea that could help a nation. A line thicker than my unibrow. And that's good, because otherwise you get... COMMUNISIM.

Open source is great, and Linux is the best free OS out there by FAR. But, it is the makers CHOICE of what should be released open source to the public, and that, Eggy, is what is important.

IMHO.
