Okay, I am terrible for keeping up with current music and anything cool.

On Monday I leave for Africa for 3 weeks. No SL, little TV, little radio, lots of time on planes.

I need some music to keep me entertained.

What would be your recommendations for the best music to travel by?

Thanks.

Flood by They Might be Giants is my favorite road album. Bouncy bouncy and just non-sensical enough that over-playing it won't make you think you've had an epiphany when really you're just fatigued.

LOL!
Flood is teh awesome!

"mr. horrible, mr horrible-
telephone call for mr horrible!
but before he can talk
to the Ugliness Men
there's some Horrible business
left for him to attend to,
something unpleasant has spilled on his brain,
as he spnges it off they say-
Is this Horrible,
Is this Horrible?
its the Ugliness Men, Mr. Horrible..."

*giggle*
thats the greatest album...you really should pick it up for the trip neehai, trying to decode the lyrics alone is hours of entertainment ;)

I'm a big fan of the song "Lucky Ball and Chain"!

I lost my lucky ball & chain
Now she's four years gone
Just five feet tall and sick of me
And all my rattling on

She threw away her baby-doll
I held on to my pride
But I was young and foolish then
I feel old and foolish now

Confidentially --
she never called me baby-doll
Confidentially --
I never had much pride
But now I rock a bar stool
and I drink for two
just pondering this time bomb in my mind...

And, of course, Particle Man...

(I clearly am not earning my salary today...)

Particle man, particle man
Doing the things a particle can
What's he like? It's not important
Particle man

Is he a dot, or is he a speck?
When he's underwater does he get wet?
Or does the water get him instead?
Nobody knows, Particle man

Triangle man, Triangle man
Triangle man hates particle man
They have a fight, Triangle wins
Triangle man

Universe man, Universe man
Size of the entire universe man
Usually kind to smaller man
Universe man

He's got a watch with a minute hand,
Millenium hand and an eon hand
When they meet it's a happy land
Powerful man, universe man

Person man, person man
Hit on the head with a frying pan
Lives his life in a garbage can
Person man

Is he depressed or is he a mess?
Does he feel totally worthless?
Who came up with person man?
Degraded man, person man

Triangle man, triangle man
Triangle man hates person man
They have a fight, triangle wins
Triangle man

ROFL both of those are awesome... :D

is it just me, or is Road Movie To Berlin a sad, sad but lovely song?

"We were once so close to heaven
Peter came out and gave us medals
Declaring us the nicest of the damned..."

I LOVE that one!

*dances*

"I'm your only friend
I'm not your only friend
but I'm a little glowing friend
but really I'm not actually
your friend but I am -

Blue canary in the outlet by the lightswitch,
who watches over you!
Make a little birdhouse in your soul.

Not to put too fine a point on it,
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet.
Make a little birdhouse in your soul."

oh - and my favorite part:

"There's a picture opposite me,
of my primitive ancestry,
who lived on rocky shores
and kept the beaches shipwreck free.
Though I respect that a lot,
I'd be fired if that were my job,
After killing Jason off
and countless screaming argonauts!

Bluebird of friendliness,
like guardian angels its,
always near
and while you're at it
leave the nitelight on
inside the birdhouse in your soul."

^_^

TMBG is awesome. It is definately upbeat and entertaining.

Beck is pretty good, also entertaining. I would suggest either Midnight Vultures or Odelay (Odelay got the grammy for best album in 1996).

I dont know what you will be doing in Africa, but my favorite "driving music" is the soundtrack for the movie, Rumblefish. It is pretty much all music, only one song has lyrics, but the music has a nice pace for driving.

Have fun on your trip. Listen to plenty of local radio, that ought to be fun stuff :)

I remember an urban-fantasy novel I read where a bard sang They Might be Giants songs to drive his telepathic captors insane while they tried to probe his mind for usefull information...

I can really, really see how that would work.

*dances in chair with Ananda*

My alltime favorite TMBG songs!!

Now it's going to be stuck in my head all day. That's ok though, I can't think of a better song to be rattling around in that big empty cavern known as my mind.

Depends what your mood is. I like "In Case You Didn't Make It To The Show" by Ministry, the live album of their '89 tour. It's industrial and quite heavy.

I find Esthero, Juno Reactor, and Portishead are good for relaxing.

But if you want an in-between, go for the oldies.. Smiths, The Cure, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Iggy Pop, or the Buzzcocks. :)

Even reach to Bowie, The Who, The Beatles, or Floyd. :)

Oh, the Clash! That reminds me, I need to claim that album as soon as I get home...

"My daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money"
