I just quintupled my RAM to 1.25G and ramped my preferences. I'm finding the display only marginally better (tho I haven't had much chance to explore), but texture load-times and overall lag are waaaaay down. Even in bad lag, I move smoothly (if slowly), instead of jerking around and ending up 1000m away. I am no longer slowing the herd :D

You don't say what kind of video card you're using.

I know when I upgraded my system...I found very few if any thing really lagged it. SL still does, but Everquest II does not. Is it the graphics engine they're using?

Post your specs...
mine are as follows

AMD 64 3400+
Gigabyte Nforce3 GA-K8NS Pro-939
2 gigs of Corsair Ram dual channel
550 watt power supply
ATI Radeon 800xt pro
Audigy2 Platinum ZS with breakout box
Logitech z-5300 5.1
500 gig Western Digital Sata

eagerly awaiting 2.0 - even with the beast I have, I find that SL manages to lag me.
Does anyone have a suggestion on recommend optimal visual settings for SL? I've monkeyed with the settings but really don't have a clue what I'm doing there so I ususally go back to defaults.

Proof that SL is in DIRE need of optimization, I have a pretty nice machine too and I should be getting much better performance out of SL than I do. SL has to be one of the worst games out there in terms of performance. I don't buy the argument that "SL only needs 10 or 15 fps because it's not an action game". Maybe one reason it's not more of an "action" game is because of this fact, not the other way around.

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

The weird thing about SL is that no matter what system I have run it on, it will hog all the resources. There is some noticable lag reduction on high end machines, however I think "the last mile" is the biggest bottleneck with a application like SL, which streams so much content.

Erm...nowhere near that. I have a midline 256MB Nvidia, Dell's built-in sound (next upgrade), and a Pentium 4 at 2.?Gh. This RAM upgrade is the first time I've opened my computer case, and if I'd know how easy it would be, I would have done it 8 months ago.

Keep in mind that THIS IS NOT A GAME. I know, yes, it is somewhat, but the fact is that there is a tiny minority of pre-authored, predictible content, and a great deal of potentially shifting content increasing exponentially with every av on a server. If, in the middle of a crowded club with 3 dozen people using their new custom dance anim, changing their clothes, swapping prim-hair, and playing sound files, while their bling/poof/follow attachments scour every line of chat for a user command, things slow down a little bit, it's because that's how long it takes. I don't care if your system is sixteen entrained, sentient suns; it's gonna take a minute.

When you first got on SL and took a fly-about, did you say to yourself, "Ho hum, it's just what I expected and maybe less"? Because I was like, "Holy shiznizzle, I can't believe we can even attempt this." And that's when I was flailing around like Tourette's Boy with 256MB of RAM.

By putting this technology out there before it's perfect, polished, and smooth, LL is helping make the metaverse a reality, however far we still are from it today. You know this, all of you gripers (not targeting you, Nina, just the tone the thread has taken), or you wouldn't still be here.

I may be a little predisposed in LL's favor because I JUST GOT A BURNING LIFE SPOT!!!

(pause for dance of joy)

I have to log on now.

Sigh . . . shiny is apparently something I will never know. It's grayed out on my panel in the game.

It was on mine, too, before the memory upgrade. Some systems are quirky, but I would guess that either a RAM or vid card upgrade would get you all the shiny you can handle.

I'm not good at this stuff, but I think maybe RAM is the answer to all my problems, as I have only 512 whatever it is now. Dell has made me operate on my computer before, but I am loathe to operate on it. Is it easy to put more memory in?
