What am I talking about: All the scripted blinds and one-way glass doesn't really mean anything, because I found there is a way to "sneak through" and look all you want thanks to the camera. Anyone else notice this and do you think this is a problem?

This has been discussed before. Really, it's one of the biggest reasons for the rampant "security script" fiascos that are pretty common here.
I'da know. Personally, I'm a fan of finding some form of middle ground when it comes to privacy. I'm all for limited instancing or a peer-to-peer environment where this is concerned, but by and large the message has been "if you want true privacy, buy your own sim." Which sucks, but I guess it's something that goes with the territory in a shared user environment. In the meantime, privacy in SL exists as a system of ban scripts/functions, skyboxes, and a good ol' false sense of security. ![]() _____________________

I always have to laugh when it comes to security doors. Most time, not that _I_ would know, but people have locked doors on their houses, but no security systems. All someone needs to do is to sit on a block and move it in the house toget through the door. Useless I tell ya!

I wonder who makes a living off of renting private islands like some sort of "NO SEE HOTEL". I wonder if there'd be a way in the future to splice sims up and compartmented for this purpose. Sometimes I fly to islands and I see one parcel that's surrounded with the red bars but not others, and wonder if they'd be better served—with the greater controls that an estate can provide—by dropping that portion outta sight and accessible only to peeps on the list.
I know it'd be an ugly piece on the mainland, but someone's private island, whatcha gonna do? ![]() Another thing would be some sort of tunnelled metametaverse, a grid stacked on top of the current one like 3D chess. Kind of like the white construct in the Matrix, a further exemplification of the skybox for privacy. _____________________

The tinted windows and such give the illusion of privacy, which can do wonders. I agree with the "who cares, it's just pixels" camp, but when I see an AV standing and "staring" at me I get the creeps. I don't really care that anyone can use the camera to watch me inside my house. As long as I am blissfully unaware, enjoy yourselves.

Blinds aren't so much meant as a surefire way to guarantee full privacy. But they work great as a signal that people don't want to be disturbed.
The same can be said for locked doors. The rest is up to the decency of the visitor. _____________________

not a whole lot stopping my neighbors from standing under my bed room window and listening to whats going on in my rl bedroom either.
except common decency. unless you have a really big dog i suppose. From the way i hear it IRL , its not very hard to break into a house either - so easy in fact that lovked windows and doors are mainly for your own peace of mind - if someone realy wants in - they are getting in. I think the real issue is the lack of common decency amoung many of the SL population. They walk up on private property with green dots on it and noticing the door is locked manipulate their way inside or their camera inside? And somehow Linden Labs is at fault? Not the peeping tom's? |

What manipulating yardarm told you that you could maintain privacy on the mainland? They are obviously not your friend.

Common Decency
08-29-2005 13:08
As long as you have anonymity, you will not have common decency...generally, people tend to be a bit more "loosey goosey" when they believe their identity is obscured...and with no "law" against it...what can you do?
Did you know that you can just do a debug/rendering/volume and all walls and attachments disappear? No, there is no such thing as privacy in Second Life...unless you have your own island. ![]() |

Who needs to use a camera..if you want to go anywhere anytime with 3 simple steps, create-sit-move. ta~da. One simple prim box to sit on is all you need, edit the prim your sitting on and by changing the position you can magically move thru any walls or fly infinetly high, unless its privately owned group land then theres no stopping where you can put yourself. If things are tricky and permissions to create on the land aren't possible go somewhere you can and just keep moving until your back where you wanted to be, one heck of a out-of-the-way method togo about invading others privacy, as well as giving them a reason to be equally upset at you because its certainly not something that somebody would do by 'accident' ~.~

I know I don't post much, but I think they should at least make it so you CAN'T do the things you guys are talking about, there should be an option to enable/disable those things. Using the camera to peek in and moving YOUR prims through other people's objects, should be prohibitied IMO, well unless your in the group that owns it. Here's the prop# for those who care, like me: Prop: 276
