Satellites, Announcement and Speakers In Slate The more I think about this situation the more I don’t like it...
Last night while I was logged on in Slate a voice came over all of slate saying something to the affect of "either this is going to crash the sim or you will hear an announcement"
As the announcement boomed threw out the entire sim I thought "huh". I decided to go investigate and low and behold I saw several satellites hovering over my once peaceful home.
Did anyone ask the residents if this "sim wide announcement system" would be ok? No one asked me.
Did anyone write about such a plan in the forums? Not that I have yet noticed.
This to me is much worse than the billboards at least those are not shouting at me advertising their wears.
I have no idea what this system is in place for other than advertising.
No I do not like the idea of hearing unwanted announcements made overhead. Maybe if I understood what the idea was behind all this it would help. Right now it just appears a to be a damn good way to clear a sim of all existing residents.

don't know who put that one up, but i was thinking about blanketing all of the sims with my communications array with the sole purpose of broadcasting the town hall meetings. also, i might add mine does not boom to everyone, it would only be heard in a whisper radius of the 'radio.'
if you(read all of SL) think this is a good idea, i will set it up. just to reiterate, if you are outside of a 10m radius of the 'radios' you will not hear a thing.

10m if no one can hear it unless they right on top of the object what is the point? Sorry but "blanketing" a sim with speakers is not my idea of a good time. Town hall meetings are already broadcast via IM to the entire world. I am realy realy wanting my my own island Cat

um the point is that it is unobtrusive. who said anything about blanketing a sim with speakers; all i was offering was away for people to tune in, if they chose to; which seemed to solve the problem indicated by your comments and questions concerning the system that was tested. however it was my mistake in not realizing what the actual problem was. you wish for solitude and a completely controlled environment.

Sorry that was me, it was for my treasure hunt. I put them up so I didn't have to use the lindens to give announcements like, there are so many treasures left to find and the hunt is over. I repeated several time I was sorry for the inconvience, and I still am. It wasn't ment to be malicous or anything. But I did have alittle scirpitng problem at the begining with on of the broadcasters but Chrisopher helped me fix that. On the themed sims I ask permission before running a hunt and using the broadcasters but I thought the extra votes it would bring into the area would be worth the inconvience to an unthemed sim. Sorry again.

Maybe for the next treasure hunt, you could hand out radios to all the participants, so you can broadcast announcements to them and no one else.

edited for clarity: nada: "um the point is that it is unobtrusive. who said anything about blanketing a sim with speakers; all i was offering was away for people to tune in, if they chose to; which seemed to solve the problem indicated by your comments and questions concerning the system that was tested. however it was my mistake in not realizing what the actual problem was. you wish for solitude and a completely controlled environment." but nada went onto ask: "who said anything about blanketing a sim with speakers;" Me: You said something about blanketing a sim. Roflmao! nada: “don't know who put that one up, but i was thinking about blanketing all of the sims with my communications array with the sole purpose of broadcasting the town hall meetings” Me: Question how would they be able to choose to tune in? Do they need to get a copy of a receiver to receive those transmissions? J however it was my mistake in not realizing what the actual problem was. you wish for solitude and a completely controlled environment. Not exactly I love company and I love events and I welcome neighbors to the sim by the same token, do not wish to be bombarded by others “environments” either. Please do not try to summarize my existence in SL in one sentence assuming that you know what my needs, hopes and wishes are. They are to have a unique experience yet to have another space in which I can “detach” and quietly create what I would like to. Hard to believe that I can and do want it all but I do I see both sides of many issues in SL and have tried to stay neutral on many hot topics. Last night that “announcement” that started this thread was heard all over my land, regardless of where I was on the land. That is my point. What if it was just a constant message “Buy all your goods at Blaa Blaa’s place, only blaa blaa has what you need. Blaa Blaa has the lowest prices in the entire SL world…” Or worse: “<Insert the most obnoxious sound you cant stand> loop sound forever. Do you at the very least see my points not as they pertain to you but as they would pertain to anyone in slate? Cat

The thing is, they were (1) temporary and (2) being used for a one-time event. If you had asked the owner of the satellites about it or listened to the global event IMs, this argument wouldn't be happening.
And I like your idea, Nada; being able to listen to a broadcast of large meetings in a relatively empty area seems infintely preferable to crowding everyone in the Ampitheater.

Sorry again. Jericho not a problem at all I did not realize there was a treasure hunt and I do appreciate the event and would of even let ya hide stuff on my property I had no idea that this was a temp situation. No apology needed on your part. I am so relieved to hear that they were just temp I hope your treasure hunt was a terrific success and for the record I do not have a problem with temp communications being used for events thanks Darwin Cat

Your correct I should of IMed the owner but frankly I was in no mood for a debate or to take issue with anyone Cat

I think one of the ideas from earlier sounds cool. You could make headsets and hand them out and then it could whisper to the owner. You'd still have to make the satellites, but... heh, I just think it'd be cool

Nada's setup is great. If you arent wearing a headset in Gibson you pretty much dont hear anything. If you are, you are totally aware of other users and are able to communicate with ease. Its a very subtle and useful system.
