Hi after watching the Ball Game last night (A Great success BTW Ben). I noticed that it is impossible to participate in team oriented games such as this and to communicate with your team mates at the same time since you are too busy to go into chat mode.

I play a number of other MMOGs such as WWIIONLINE and we have the same problem. We found a solution to this thru the use of a number of external voice systems. We used to use Roger Wilco but last year switched to Team Speak since it is more efficient with less bandwidth.

I am the squad TS Server Admin and run a TS server for our squad. I know that I am a noob (coming up on 1 week) but I would like to suggest we try TS for voice communications in SL.

I have set up a TeamSpeak test server for Second Life. This is a test only. If it is well received I will set up a LINUX version with much more capacity. To try it out do the following:

1. Go to www.teamspeak.org and download the TS RC2 client for windows.

2. Install on your system. You will need a cheapo microphone or cheap pair of headphones with a mike. After installing the software use the "quick connect" with the following info:

Server Address:
63.193.165.76

Nickname:
Enter your name (Ex Sturm Valen)

You will be logged on and placed in channel 1 - the lobby

Say something and I will talk to you. I have to allow registration.
then I will give you instruction on how to register.

I have made Jaxiam and BBC System Admins also so they can authorized you for registration and give you the info you need.

You will be able to bounce around channels in the game.
I have set up 4 channel:

Channel 1 (the Default) Lobby
Channel 2
RED Team
BLUE Team

TS allows you to map keys to do things like goto channel or to change the volume while in world.

I have set my keys to
R+1 for channel 1 , R+2 for channel 2 etc. I have only set up 4 channels. 1,2 and RED and BLUE channels for the BLUE TEAM and RED TEAM for the next game.

I am anxious to be able to speak to some of you in world, so please somebody try it. I will have the TS server up all the time for a while as a test if anyone would like to try it.

In the production environment we can create as many channels as we want. TEAM CHANNELS, GROUP CHANNELS, (the PERV Channel :)) or region channels such as OUTLANDS.

Private password protected channels are also available. please help me test this out. This small system should be able to handle 20-30 users but the larger systems can handle hundreds.

See you on the Second Life TS server.

I have tested it and it works with the game

After having logged on to the TS server. start SL as usual
I have the Push to Talk key set to F12 in the TS client so I
went into SL Gestures on the EDIT menu and deleted the F12 Dance step. It just wasn't me anyway. That way, you wont be twirling everytime you say something on voice. Seems to work fine and i have no degradation on my line that I can see.

Try it

Ok I took a gamble with this and gave it a go. I will admit, I was skeptical. I mean SL already sucks up a major portion of bandwidth - did I *really* wanna degrade that anymore than I already do? That coupled with my computer barely meeting SL's requirements was dangerous (256 ram, 32 meg vid card). So I expected it to bomb.

So I was quite suprised when I not only could run the program, *and* hear and speak quite clearly with another SLer, but that it also ran perfectly well during bootup of SL, during logon, *and* during play!!

It seemed to have no serious impact on my SL experience at all - save in a totally benifical way.

I was able to keep conversing with SLers while I built, while we were sims apart working on seperate projects, while watching inworld chatter.

It was quick - allowed for the free flow of ideas and banter.

In all - a outstanding success.

Thank you Sturm - for giving us all in SL a chance to explore this most excellent addition to what is already an Outstanding experience.

our Battlefield 1942 Clan uses Ventrilo ( http://ventrilo.com ) for over all ease of use and clearity, as well as its minimal bandwith use. I also use it while playing Secondlife to talk to a friend of mine Sn3aky Beach. We both have no problem what so ever and the sound quality is supurb to roger wilco, though i have bearly used teamspeak so i cannot compair it to that. Well, just posting this to let every one have more options.

Another option is one that is 'chronicled' in this forum string:

/13/78/1089/1.html

While this solution is not 'free' ($5/month), it is probably the best and highest quality solution out there. There is a 15 day free trial to be able to check it out.

I agree that adding VOIP solutions to SL is a great enhancement to the SL experience. And it does not have to impact those who prefer a 'slient' world.

Plus having the ability to 'call' friends and family long distance or overseas for next to nothing is a great benefit (I have talked with people in Austrailia and Europe with e4chat).

I and several of my friends use e4chat to collaborate and chat while in SL. It just makes everything 'easier'.

Lyra

Sorry, I have been on the road on a laptop and only checked the Forums briefly. This thread is a very old thread announcing the original TEST SL server that was running on one of my windoze systems here at my house.

After this test was concluded we went out and got a Linux server on a fat pipe which is now running at:

64.156.241.169:8768

I posted a different message about this new server and have been running classes about it and handing out a TeamSpeak installation note.

I also have a full collection of setup screens on some boards in front of my house in Federal. To find them just go East as far as you can. I am just south of Catherine Omega's and Tracy Kato's places

IM me in world and I will be happy to help too

Sturmie

Sturm-

That's cool, Dave Zeeman let me know you wouldn't be around until Thursday, and knowing about the OLD server puts the last piece of the puzzle into place!

The fact that you /handed/ me the notecard with the right information on it two weeks ago should turn my AVs hair blonde. Or at least.. purpley-blonde.

I've seen your set-up, and it was in fact on the first guided tour I was ever on! I tend to forget things and then be reminded to do them at the strangest times, otherwise I'd have been doing this forever ago.

Hope you are doing well, and thanks for the response regardless of the fact that I made it work!

A small suggestion is make it so teamspeak won't always be on top and that it's in taskbar

Almost all of the WWIIONLINers in the game are on Teamspeak now. We use the TEMPLAR channel on the Second Life TS server

The WWOIlers started yesterday it's the name of a group. We need the password for that team channel.
