I apparantly have 24 objects out there somewhere, when I thought I didn't have any. If anybody will send me a landmark for any object belonging to me, I will gladly pay $2 per object.

Thanks!
Kerstin

Don't worry...

We're going to implement something to fix this... objects not on ones own land will gradually 'decay' to public ownership. Not in yet, but will be soon. We realize that finding stuff that is just laying around out there is a big pain right now... sorry!

say it isn't so

decay to public??
does this mean my super-secret scripts, ultra high-tech designs, and uber-leet textures will be an open book to any sneaky person that pushes my object to his/her home?

Oh eeeek! I'm a renter.

Oh, plus the stuff that folks have in the consignment shop and such places -- wouldn't want those things to decay to public ownership!

Hmmm hmmm hmmm... how about decaying (or simply deleting) objects which haven't been touched (or focused on) by their owner in 30 days? Would be nice to have something pop up (or be manually pull-up-able) once a week listing out every object you own that is currently In World and telling you how long it's been since you touched it (or focused on it, or whatever the criteria is going to be). If it could give the coordinates for each of those objects as well that would be even better.

dunno if this is possible (or mentioned before) but it would be great if you could hook up the minimap tracker's yellow-beam-from-the-sky to point out my objects which are not on my propery.
conversely, it would be nice to be able to track other people's objects which are on my property.

Oops... I stated that a bit wrong...

What I meant was that objects on public land (not owned by anyone) would decay ownership. This means that renters would be fine, so long as they are on land owned by someone else.

Viva renters...

thanks for the clarification, but...

But the more I think about it, the more I dislike the idea of "decay to public ownership". I'm with bp on this one. I vote to be able to find all objects owned by me no matter where they are. If we MUST "decay" objects on public property, my vote is to have them simply deleted. I have to work really hard to get my scripts to do what I want them to do (with good hints and help) -- and like bp, I don't want others to be able to simply "take" what I've sweated for when an object of mine goes astray.

I agree - and I think we already have that covered:

If an object is made public, it still can't be edited/modified/etc if the creator hadn't set those flags. Try it yourself and you'll see what I mean. Our basic design preserves authorship and privacy, even if objects are made public. If this isn't working in some cases, it's a bug that we can fix.

Building tools to find everything you own is hard when the system i truly decentralized (as SL is)... there is no central database of objects in SL. They really do live on the simulator that they are sitting in. Imagine what things will be like when we have 1000's of simulators!

It always seemed to me that 'automated' methods of 'garbage collection' would be cool because it is such drudgery (even of we had good tools) to keep track of all your stuff. Doesn't seem like much fun. Much easier to just keep track of stuff on land you own.

But hardcore deleting things seems a little too 'efficient' - I like the idea of finding the occassional beachball in the forest - a little litter makes like more interesting, yes? Hence the thoughts of changing things to public or something like that so that passers-by could delete if they wanted to, or allternately leave stuff there.

As i mentioned in the scripting forums, i have a script that will locate all the obects in a server, you just have to spawn it there, and off it goes to find them, and then once it is done, it will report back to you their vector coordinates. Tonight, i am going to make it such that it will lead you to them, rather than just give you the coordinates, so it is even easier to use :-)

they only way i know of to make an object public is to Release it. that automatically makes it modifyable by anyone. is there some other way to make an object public?

Now that'd be extremely helpful. Does the script search underground, too? I know only Lindens can find items that have gotten lost underground at the moment.

it will find you objects that are under ground, however that may or may not be of use because you cannot select it if it is underground

A little advanced trick...

If you know something is underground, you can select it by rotating your view until you are directly over it, looking down, and the box-select over the general area with the edit tool.

Ideally we won't let stuff go underground... but until then...
