Well,

I just read the SLTV announcement following the MOTD, and I'm excited. So, to start this thread (free-for-all about SLTV), I'd love to give some advice to potential applicants (as I'm far too busy IRL to apply on my own):

PLEASE:: Use/Support RTSP. It rocks my socks. If you decide to use QTSS or DSS, I'll give you a massive, 30-second hug. That means I can add your content to my PiraTeV and the Captain's Home TV. Sheesh, I'll even add your own channel. Seriously, being able to watch SL movies inside SL is just too cool! :D

Well, anyway that's my public service annoucement. Fire away about SLTV. ;)

Yeah,

From: someone

We would like to enable QuickTime streaming to make broadcasts available in-world as well.

Should not be optional.

Is Linden Lab going to hold the entries? Please, also add the links to SLGuide which works with FreeView:

http://www.SLGuide.com/

SLGuide is a web-based database we can share of content that plays withing Second Life. The web site opens when you click the view screen, and when you click on a link on the web site, it plays in world. Anyone can add streams that play with will be approved by our moderation team.

I look forward to seeing the entrants! :-)

That's so not an incentive to do something like this.

$100 000 L? Come on -- cheap. For the amount of work one would have to put in for this over 3 weeks to make it look and act pro would take up a good chunk of one's PAYING day-time. Even still, I have a non-compete with my employer anyway. :(

It's cool that LL is finally starting to see the reality here. I myself have been working towards something like this and I know lots of people who are also starting their own projects that aim for this sort of future.

Anyway -- a tip to any would-be entrants -- check out DTV for archiving of content. You might even be able to hack it to provide streams as well, depending on the functionality and licensing. Basically it uses RSS feeds and a wicked-easy torrent publishing system to create "TV" channels. It downloads the content in the background much like a PVR of sorts.

Good luck to all those that enter. May this be a benefit to SL media culture.

I believe that SLTV has revenue sharing as well:

From: someone

Create an affiliate program to give the operator SLTV.com the ability to earn money through a revenue sharing arrangement

This could work out fairly well, if the SLTV starts advertising inworld content.

Yeah, I read that part too.

In my experience, such things are a big risk and take a long time to start generating any revenue worth-while.

Basically as a professional developer, I'd build this site for LL, get paid in fake money and hope to start getting real money in 3 - 6 months.

I'd rather get paid in cash up-front and possibly discount it for a revenue-sharing agreement. :)

Missed this thread! :o

It's awesome that Linden involves the community in some projects, but for this one, they should probably hire someone to get it going.

I doubt anyone will be allowed to to spamvertise on the site to make revenue. And anyway, people can just bookmark the Streaming link so it can open in a player, bypassing the website content.

Maybe Linden can create the site, and ask people to submit time blocks for the streaming content?

We at SLBC fully agree with you and we're trying our best to make that a reality, but unfortunately the server the Lindens handed us only handles Windows Media Encoder streams :( We're working on a solution to get the SLTV into SL rather than JUST the webpage...

No doubt.

What are the lindens thinking by not providing quicktime streaming? Can you share some of their logic?

The Lindens are saving the QT steaming for their own SLTV, to be lanched in-world soon after SLBC has done all the groundwork for them...

I can see the thread in announcements already... "We believe that it is too hard for new users to watch SLBC and that this service should be viewable from inside SL, therefore we hired a yound kid to copy what SLBC have worked so hard on and incorporated QT streaming so that our SLTV can be viewed from in-world."

I'm very disappointed that QT is not supported. I suspect that limitations in their IT staff, rather than the administration, are driving these decisions. I recommend replacing or supplementing their current IT staff working on the server with those who both understand the importance of interoperability and have the technical skills to implement it.

The only reason I joined and continue to be a part of SL is that it is a multiplatform virtual world (with the promise of a Linux client in the future). I find the move to proprietary single-platform media formats troubling.

I was part of the group that came in second. It's my understanding they didn't like our Quicktime proposal because they wanted every Tom, Dick and Harry to be able to broadcast live video. Since Windows Media Encoder is free, anyone with a Windows PC and a powerful enough computer can stream thier own video. Quicktime encoding on Windows requires expensive software. So strike one against the Mac users.

My arguement was that you didn't want every Tom, Dick and Harry to stream low quality video, but rather high quality content from people who had the tools and desire to make good stuff... Like the Poser approach...

In the end, I value inworld content (including on demand video) equal to the website (where the real revenue is).

We didn't really have a solution we were comfortable with, that would do real-time translation for a live feed. Any ideas?

Thanks! It's been great using SL to accomplish my RL work. SLTV was for my spare time ;) I couldn't stay away from free bandwidth.

Real-time video conversion doesn't sound fun. ;)

The best solution I can think of is for there to be multiple "cameras". For example, Video Linden currently broadcasts a live WMV stream. Add QT Linden (Cutie Linden? :)) to broadcast a MP4 stream from a vantage point 15-30 degrees away from Video Linden.

It's a bit hackish, but it works :D

In the end we ammended the original proposal to say this, but it increases the cost of the investment since it requires both a Windows server and an Open Darwin Server. We are thinking of moving forward with our project anyway, but only if we can protect ourselves from becoming the next GOM.

Anyway, I think the winners will do a great job, and I look forward to seeing the way it is implemented and adapts to provide residents inworld video over time.

Any suggestions I can make can be seen here:
http://oz.slinked.net/SLTV/

A mock up I made, but decided not to go through with submitting.

Note only schedule.html and programdetails.html are other pages that work. :P

Can't wait to see what the team working on it comes up with. A bit dissapointed that more details on the group and winning proposal weren't released though. :/

Is it just me, or is it ridiculous that LL won't eat their own dogfood in regards to SLTV? It seems retarded that the result will not be a QT streaming feed. If LL will make the result available only via WMV, then why isn't the WMV streaming format supported in SL?

It's a business decision. People who view the live streaming events via the web, have never been to SL before and may sign up for a new account. People watching video inworld have already paid for the account. The live video is the most popular section of the SecondLife website currently and a really effective promotional tool. So now anyone with a high end PC that can run SL and spare cycles for Windows Media Encoder, can essentially become a Video Linden.

I first joined SL, when one day I started crawling random nodes on the Internet and found Ulrika's Thriller video. This is quality on demand content. I don't think I would of joined if I just saw a live stream of AV's dancing at a Noob club.
