Some friends and I recently started a group. I've been debating about whether or not to set my land to belong to the group. I was also wondering about the options..... there is one to "set" land to group, and one to "deed" land to group. Can anyone explain the difference? And if the group were to later disband, would I be able to withdraw my land from group status? I'd appreciate any feedback on this, since I am still confused after reading what little information I've been able to find.
Also, do you still pay tier on land you've donated to your group?

The different between setting and deeding is simply ownership. In both cases items on the land with a matching group tag will count as "group object". If the land is just set to group, then you will have full control over the land; if the land is deeded to group, then any group officer will have full control over the land.
I'll defer on the disbanding group question, not that familiar with groups.
As for tier, someone will have to pay it and donate some amount of their tier to the group to use. That can be you or any other group member. Just like a resident though, the group will need to have enough tier space to cover the land it "owns". There is a 10% bonus given to group-donated tier as well. Donating 1000m2 of tier would let the group own 1100m2 of land.

Also, do you still pay tier on land you've donated to your group? 'Setting' the land to group is largely used for prim managent. If you set the land to group, and prims are placed down in that group, they will show up as group objects and not 'others'. When you set the land to group, you're still the owner. If you deed the land to group, the whole group then owns the land. This requires trust in your fellow group members as any officer of the group could sell the land for 0L$ to themselves. As the whole group owns the land, you all have the permissins a sole owner would, such as enabling/disabling land edit etc. If the land is sold whilst owned by the group, the money goes into the group account and is paid out in equal shares the next day as dividends. The group needs to have enough tier to own the land. This tier is contributed from members of the group. It can be all contributed by one person or shared between the group. What's important is that the tier is covered of course. There is the added benefit of being able to hold 10% more land for your tier when you deed to group. If you donate 1000m2 of your tier to the group, the group can own 1100m2. I hope that helps, apologies if it doesn't read well, its getting late and I can barely see the screen lol!

Many thanks for the clarification! One last question I forgot to ask before.... if a member has no land of their own but wants to be able to set the group land as "home", can they do that?

Somebody has to pay the tier on the land you donate to the group.
If you don't go on paying that tier, your group shows a negative and Linden Labs can seize that land.
So you have to go on paying it, but as you pay for it, be fully aware that it is no longer really yours, you cannot get it back if you have deeded it to the group, and any other officer can sell it out from under you.
The only way to get back your land is to set it to $0 and sell it back to yourself, being careful to debit out the tier applied to the group, and put it back on yourself, so you yourself can't double-billed by LL merely for taking land from a group and moving it back to yourself.
This is a pain in the ass, easy to mess up, and can be undone but it takes some doing, so be careful as you do it.
You get 10 percent more tier coverage available in a group, but ask yourself if the risks -- which are considerable -- are worth it.

From: someone so you yourself can't double-billed by LL merely for taking land from a group and moving it back to yourself. Tell me about it. You go over your tier for 1 minute to do such a transfer and you will have to pay it even if you report it to billing and beg for clemency. So yes, be very careful! T
