I was going to say "Interesting goodies" but somehow this has changed, and my history has taken a different turn. I decided to look in the SecondLife folder the other day to see, uh, what was in there. Most of the time I've launched the SL shortcut from Desktop so it was kind of like being a surgeon.
Curiously enough, I found a "trial" folder. It contains what seems to be obsolete references! This is for the Windows version, BTW, let me know if it applies to the Mac one too. Such as...
From: someone Free trial users can't upload sounds or textures.
With a paid membership you can upload sounds and images. Put a vacation snapshot on your wall, create unique new clothing, or import a wild soundclip for your ray-gun. Upgrade to a Second Life membership now and start uploading your own sounds and images.
And *gasp*:
From: someone Free trial users aren't allowed to make scripts.
With a paid membership you can use a simple, built-in scripting language to give your creations different behaviors. Whether building a better weapon than your opponent or a pair of fluttering fairy wings, you can add something completely new to the world, but only if you're a Second Life resident. Upgrade to a Second Life membership now and start experimenting with what scripts can do.
I can imagine how much my SL trial would have sucked if this had been crippled. I wonder if this was definitely true at one point? Any oldbie Residents remember?
Then, I went on to the "fonts" folder. Some familiar typefaces in there!
There are a few other things like the ability to customize GUI art, not sure how well that currently works.
Any other interesting finds?

Yeah the Trials back then sucked big time. Feel bad for the newbies of that time. Yes the colors.ini works, but the view_art.ini does not except for a few buttons here and there etc. unless you run at a really really big resolution, then it's fully skinnable (but I can barely read the text so it doesn't matter). I haven't tried editing the .xml files in there, but in theory one could add elements/delete elements from the GUI... no idea if this would work or be usefull or not. Other interesting stuff, the Character folder seems to contain stuff like main avatar skeleton generation (avatar_lad.xml and genepool.xml) and such, as well as default skins. I've installed the Fonts, but not used them. Fun to have though!

I honestly don't remember there being a trial account back in the day. I think that's a new thing although I could be mistaken. All I know is that I got a regular account and I still have screenshots of my first day.
I look like a total dork.
I remember I had to summon a Linden to newbie island because I couldn't figure out how to modify my newbie hat. LMAO

Thanks, Oz... I had a feeling you'd know something about all of this!
Okeydoke, any good reason why that trial text is still in here? I guess it could be archived for posterity but it's kinda like an appendix... or something?

Thanks for sharing your experiences... can you show the screenshots too! Even if you say you look like a dork.
One BIG thing about SL for me was that the trial was so free (literally), I think that made a big difference in me getting involved. I was unhappy with the way There does their trial, and I just revisited There and still feel the same way (almost a year later).

I guess the Lindens just don't clean out their packages very often (free joke setup). Keep in mind Second Life was still labled "newview.exe" untill recently (I like to think it's because I questioned the reason why it was still newview ).

Hmmm... well that's consistent with the Outlands references in the Basic Help file. It's a good joke setup too. ~cymbal crash~

Well, I still look like a dork. I look the same as I did my first day on my trial account. Course, *I* don't think I look like a dork. I think I look bee-you-tee-full! I take comfort in the fact that Philip doesn't change his look much, either. coco

For those of you who were not here back in the day, trial accounts did suck. Trial users were actually restricted to the 4 Welcome Area sims. They could not leave. Luckily, LL didn't keep the restriction very long.

Oh no! That would be terrible! Might even have made some of the people so irritated they refused to get a real account. coco

Luckily, LL didn't keep the restriction very long. Yeah, that's pretty weak. The thing that got me hooked on SL was exploring the continent and discovering Abbots Aerodrome. I bought a premium account so I could buy one of his shuttlecraft.

Luckily, LL didn't keep the restriction very long. I started around that time (Sept 2003), but I think they permitted more than 4 sims, but no Mature sims. Anyway, it was incentive to go and buy a regular account so that I could explore and find out what the rest of the world was like. We also were blocked from spending our L$ until we signed up, probably to prevent alt account abuses. That part was very frustrating, because I remember having enough to buy a pair of speed boost wings, but being unable to actually buy them.
