Hm, thanks for the precaution but the issues raised in that are old hat, dating back several years. I almost laughed at the anachronistic date. :)

Having a tool is one thing, knowing how to use it is another. This isn't specific to Bearshare but a whole variety of P2P programs -- I bet there's a lot of finer points not mentioned in that article, like specifically the possibility that this was not an inherent vulnerability in the program that could be corrected only by the programmers, but rather, a simple (but dangerous) overlooking of which folders to set up for sharing.

Asked to share his thoughts about it, Zachary says: "I'm deeply concerned, and I think something needs to be done now. "

Gosh, I hope this isn't a parody -- but it's on CBS News. Yes, there are a number of things that can be done, including setting up only a single or select folders for sharing with others on a P2P -- or any kind of networked computer system, really -- and having monitors to keep track of outgoing traffic with the possibility to block it with the press of a button like some fine firewalls can do, if need be.

Millions of Americans now share files, usually music, by downloading what's called peer-to-peer software. The problem is many users don't understand which files exactly are being made public.

Yes, it's very important to know that. Manuals can be a grind and bore me to death sometimes, and I often wish they could be written in PLAIN ENGLISH :) eh. So, knowledge is power! w00h00.

Sadly, this article was a gross wash.

I use another gnutella servent (Limewire). The warning to be heeded here isn't BearShare specific, but applies to ANY file sharing application.

If you're not sure what you're sharing, don't use it. Its as simple as that.

In a related story, Americans are being advised not to attempt sleeping with plastic bags over their heads.
