Just curious

You forgot a tiny little detail: most of what is made here cannot be achieved in There, at all.

Yeah, they are kinda different. For examples, vehicles actually work in there!
Anyways, let's avoid the flames, shall we? here are some interesting examples of content you can build in there: http://www.fergusonv.com/there/index.php http://mckimsonconnection.com/DreamWeaver.htm http://www.ciaobelladesigns.net/ etc etc My point isn't to plug there.com, though. So I'm not going to get carried away and list the other 10 or so websites I know about. My point is really that it might be mutually beneficial if people sold content both in there and sl because: a) more money for developers means more money to build content b) more content makes both SL and There an interesting place to be However, I'm not so sure you make all that much in There. Wondering if anyone does it. _____________________

Abuse reported for hijacking thread.
Please folks, this is about selling content on multiple mmorgs. If you have something useful and knowledgable about that topic, I'd be very interested. _____________________

sigh. for heavens sake - peace!
How about IMVU.com? Does anyone build (and sell) content for imvu.com based on their ideas in SL? Or sell in SL based on their ideas in IMVU, i guess.. Are there any other worlds / places with micropayment content? _____________________

It doesn't make much sense, since you would pretty much have to start from scratch every time. Ideas are easy enough to have, it's the hours and hours of time you put into something that makes it great.

I'm not so sure.
Some things I've spent 3 hours on have sold 10x as well as things I've spent 3 months on. Anyhow, the skill sets are fairly similar though. 3D modelling, animations and texturing. _____________________

Yes, but we still lack a lot of the standards that would make direct crossover easy/possible.
Never tried There, but I'm fairly sure the content system is different from what SL offers. The way I see it, crossover would be more viable as a market if virtual worlds adhered to the same content formats, like actual 3D models. This has been a major stumbling block that I point to again and again. Forget crossover between There and Second Life. I want crossover between real 3D communities and Second Life. If you haven't guessed, this is why I keep trying to prod the Lindens to do it - and build scripts for the meantime. ![]() _____________________

I used to sell both places.
The cost of selling in There, at the volume level I was selling at (modest, steady sales) wasn't enough to cover proper listing, promotion and paz rent for my shop. There isn't the designer's medium that SL is, that's clear, but it certainly has other lovely things to offer, but making it easy to continue to do business in There wasn't on that list. I got started as a designer (in VR) in There, the Avarice line was born in There so I'm forever indebted to that other world for that and other really great things (esp. friends made & you know who you are )._____________________

I'll admit I still sell my wares in There. I love painting buggies, just a habbit of mine lol.
There's never anything wrong with playing (or selling in) two games at once. Though I am not nearly brining in as much money from There as I used too. - Sam _____________________

I sell in both SL and There. The items that I sell in There I never tried to sell in SL and what I make in SL I have never tried to make in There. There are just too many differences to do that effectively. Maybe now that There has given us more freedom, I should really see what can be done in There again....

What more freedom you have in There now? I played it about a year and a half or so ago, I guess, and I'm curious.

I also heard you could do some coding, but I am not sure how much or of what. _____________________

You should take your own advice, blaze. By the way, vehicles "actually work" in SL too. I know... I build and use them every day. _____________________

I think blaze was not starting a flame war. I think he meant was vehicles work better in There then in SL. Everyone, even the Lindens, will tell you there are issues with vehicles and sim border crossings. It just seems that some people on the forums like to start flame wars. If you think someone is baiting, report them. Remember what these forums are for. _____________________

Well, I agree with Eggy that it is the time, I think it's also that you have to be explicitly trying to enjoy yourself or make something you feel passionate about - every time I set out to "make something to make money" I fail, very miserably. Every time I say phuck-it, try to make a skin for myself, my pet moogle, or airship for myself, that's when I actually come out with something decent, worth selling, and worth my time. As far as selling content elsewhere, I've traded and resold resources in MMORPG's, but as far as creating my own work and reselling it, only SL for me. I tried There and while I'm sure it's great for some, it wasn't near as technical and customisable as SL for my tastes. I gave up as soon as I learned I had to submit my ideas and have them make them for me. ![]() |

Everyone, even the Lindens, will tell you there are issues with vehicles and sim border crossings. Well, my vehicles generally don't have any trouble with sim border crossings. I have travelled all the way across the northern continent, and down the corridor into Purple in one trip without any trouble at all. - Jon |

How fast do you travel?
Vehicles barely work for me. Maybe things have changed, recently, though _____________________

How fast do you travel? Vehicles barely work for me. Maybe things have changed, recently, though Sorry for the late reply -- I missed this... I typically travel at about 16 m/s. I can cross sim borders at 25 m/s in the vehicle park on my sleds with nothing more than a slight downward glitch as you cross the boundary. I think the number of attachments and the size of the vehicle cause most of the problems crossing sim boundaries. - Jon |

I checked OTHER because I've never been There. I have thought about it, but been told, by numerous people, that I would spend far more than I would make. Fate Gardens in SL currently pays for Khamon's annual account and monthly tier. It took a year and about $600 worth of fees and software to learn about 3D graphics and develop a bit of reputation for producing decent looking plants. I might just recover the initial investment by the time SL is swimming in a sea of virtual worlds.
Breaking even is not so bad. There are likely a lot more of us than there are people making reasonable profits doing business in SL. Still, it's a fascinating experiment. _____________________
