The Second Life Police Blotter, which will appear weekly in this forum, will offer residents a chance to see what we've been doing to enforce our Community Standards and how we've been responding to Abuse Reports.
Second Life residents have been asking lately about enforcement of Abuse Reports and community standards, and in that light, we'd like to make clear what we think is the right design for our rapidly growing SL community, and give some visibility into the enforcement process.
As we grow both as a member base and as a company, we will maintain a customer support team to actively monitor and enforce that the evolving community standards of Second Life are upheld.
SL is, at its highest level, YOUR world. It is a collective creation - an emerging society that will offer a multitude of opportunities, adventures, and experiments unachievable in our first lives. To fulfill the promise of this possibility, SL must be a diverse and cohesive community. To achieve this, we must be collectively tolerant, while still establishing boundaries of behavior that are strictly enforced. As the final arbiters of disputes within SL, we (Linden) will try to mirror what should also be going on in the community - openness and tolerance, followed by clear and decisive action in those cases where abuses are obvious and unambiguous.
Consider this a call to action to everyone to work to make this standard pervasive throughout SL. If you experience abuse, file an abuse report immediately! The report function is available from the help menu, and will include a record of chat and a screenshot of what you are currently seeing. When we receive an abuse report, we will act on it, generally within two days. On our best judgment, we will first warn, then suspend, and finally permanently ban from SL individuals who have reports filed against them.
Additionally, we will hold regular 'town hall' meetings in-world to address these issues in a live context.
See you in Second Life!
