even when you type it doesn't that ring warning bells?
Are both x and y powers of 2?

no, i thought that might be the problem, but why would that affect the color?

Because the graphics engine expects it, so if it's *not* then it gets all grabled?
To be honest I have no real idea I just know it was floaing around the groups that it had to be.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you're seeing.
There is a bug (fixed in the coming release) where textures _on_your_avatar_ would appear as a rainbow.
On the other hand, you didn't mention your avatar, perhaps the problem is more general than that. When you upload a texture to your inventory and then double-click on it (in your inventory), do you see it as a rainbow in the "preview" window? Likewise, if you apply the texture to a box, is it a rainbow then?
Please email me any images that aren't uploading correctly.
Thanks! Aaron aarony@lindenlab.com
P.S. Celerity Epoch is right, our graphics engine does internally expect images to be sized in powers of two. However, the program _should_ be automatically be rescaling images with other sizes to make them powers of two.
