Is this off topic or am I missing something?

"User-created content takes the idea of leveraging player opinions a step further by allowing them to effectively prototype new ideas and features. Developers can then measure which new concepts most improve the products and incorporate them into the game in future patches."

If somebody without connections in the Paramount "family" were trying to do a project like this, the lawyers would be on them like politicians on pork. But this site is cruising by without so much as a single copyright/trademark notice (except for a lengthy bit of boilerplate about the production company's IP).

But if Paramount wants to abdicate their rights to the original series by not enforcing them, far be it from me to discourage it. I've got some ideas of my own...

I'm interested to see what they've done, but I'm put off by the blunt refusal to allow the fan community to collaborate on any aspect of the project. I guess I've been spoiled by Second Life, where the fan community IS the production.

Paramount gave its approval for the fans to borrow the IP, paramount is not sleeping on the rights to star trek, they simply authorized this use. It is my understanding Paramount provided the producers with lengthy guidelines on how to treat various aspects of Star Trek.

In general fan films and fan fic and such get away with it because they do not charge others for the end product. Paramount will "lend" intellectual property to you if you are not charging others for it, and properly assert Paramounts copyright.

On the flip side, if you want to use Paramount's IP to make a profit of your own, then you must negotiate a license. That is a very diferent animal.

Viacom, owners of Paramount, vigorously enforce their IP with "cease and desist" orders against infringing fan sites, most of which don't charge their users a penny.

If Paramount approved New Voyages, that's great. That approval should appear on the site.

If the rules differ depending on who you know, well... welcome to the Beltway, business as usual.

Am I crazy or is there no mention on the site of them having the legal rights to the entities in question?

Every Trek fan (me included), has had this fantasy of doing this sort of thing, but I always thought Paramount would squash you like a bug.

;)
