What Would Your Metaverse Be Like?

Hi-dee-hi! I have been thinking lately...

What would I make different about SL?

And that lead to thinking, if I was to design my own Metaverse, what would it be like?

I'll post some of my ideas here, and you all can also share in the fun and think about what sort of metaverse you would make!


I think that I would give the players a lot less power than SL provides. For one thing there would be resources that would have to be creatively gathered and shaped.

I think I would like there to be no ground. Just endless sky, dotted with whatever the players and staff build, and the resources. There would be flying goo balls that you could gather and shape into things, like our prims. There would also be energy that you could create by manipulating physics in certain ways.




I have a lot of other ideas but I have to cut this short, and I'd like to give everybody else a turn. Enjoy!

if anyone played tribes 2, and the construction mod, then they will know the stuff i would add, generators, better lighting effects, a better vehichle system, dont care what anyone says vehichle steering and control is complete wack.

I'm a big Tribes 2 fan and I think I know what you're saying Karma but let's face it, most of the Tribes 2 mods sucked big time. The people added tons of stuff and made so many changes that a mod usually turned out to be an imbalanced joke. Yes the vehicle controls were whack but I think on purpose. . . because there still were some truly excellent pilots on strike fighters and even a lightly armored soldier had little chance in outmaneuvering them.

Now what exactly does this have to do with SL??? Vehicle control?? Or that limiting people is not good? Take a look at the Battlefield 1942 mod Desert Combat--the modders had no tools from the developers to work with but created a fantastic mod.

Karma is talking about SL vehicle control.

Funny you guys bring this up. I (heavily) modified the Tribes 2 engine (now called Torque) to make my own metaverse called Maythria. I put it on hold because, well, the MMOG market is for the big boys.

But, my metaverse was a huge 3d world with fantastic views and beautiful landscapes. If I could base a game around that, I would.

Grr! Sl and Maythria are not METAverses. The way you are describing them they are universes. When we all create our own universe amd put them together, then we have a metaverse. I.E. a collection of universes.

I think you're confusing Metaverse with the popular term "Multiverse"


Of course Universe is supposed to be an all encompasing description of everything so it doesn't fit when you have more than one, but that's never stopped anybody.


A metaverse is a pocket universe like SL. It's cool.

Maythria is on hold?!

Anyway, my Metaverse would be probly almost exactly like SL except more options for users to better define the enviornment, but LL is constantly working on that so they'd probly be the same.

The only thing I'd probly do that LL doesn't seem to want to is put in "Avatar Models" that look like real avatars so we can make better looking NPC's. I think it would be awsome to be able to define an Avatar completely by scripting.

My metaverse would be just like SL but instead of everyone say "Hi <firstname" when you walked up, they would all fart.

well....I want some green grass....natural grass(heh) at any height the grass would be green...maybe even bluegrass but definately natural grass springing up I would be able to teleport to the precise location of my choosing and.....nameing photos/textures would populate so no need to name twice. My crash log would also work.....and i could use my joystick with no programing necessary.

ok....yes, I just grumblin and not pretending right......


hmmm...design universe.......man....I still working on a simple dwelling......


Relee...no ground ya say....live in the middle somewhere.....that is a hard concept to think about...

wow Darwin you have a license for the Torque engine?? That's awesome since you know what you're doing. I wouldn't be able to do much. Maybe you should finish your project. . .

Metaverse and multiverse are pretty much used interchangably, tho multiverse would the more proper form in this instance. I like multiverse better anyway.

Oh, and the Torque engine is only 100 dollars.

Well when I say no ground I mean there would be just sky. No planet or simulated planet. People would have the opertunity to make floating islands if they wanted.

that rocks....reminds me of a sonic hedgehog world or Mario....not that they dont have ground...but Im down with ya now....or at least my preceptions of your vision.....

I just finished reading Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash". I want my metaverse to be like that. A long street that's permanently night.
