Donate Your Stipend to the Hurricane Relief Fund!

Visit the Linden Donation site in Waterhead (120, 10) and on Tuesday give up your stipend for one week to help those who have lost so much in the Hurricane.

Tell your friends! Give up that new bling or prim hair for just one week.

Together we can make a difference!

I'm sure this will come off as cynical, but... can I get a bit more info?

Who will be handling the donated money?
What organization is it going to?
Is this in any way official, or just a well meaning effort by concerned folks?

There is a sign in Waterhead created and set up by Pathfinder Linden and Hamlet Linden. The proceeds with be going to the American Red Cross, and just like the Relay for Life, FlipperPA will be handling the Linden to US$ transaction.

Thanks very much, Rick!

I just told a friend a few minutes before you posted this thread that I wouldn't be handing money to anyone who wasn't a direct survivor or with the Red Cross. Too many people already using it as a scam. And shame on them.

Every little bit counts...

Especially when you think about all of those people who have lost everything that they have...

...donating money to the Red Cross is so much more important and meaningful than anything I could spend my Lindens on in this game.

I hope everyone feels the same.

My prayers go out to everyone affected by this devistating tragedy.

I definitely do feel the same way. Unfortunately, my brother and his wife are two of those people in need. They're still trapped in New Orleans, trying to evacuate and being turned back by the National Guard. All of my money will be going to help them get set up somewhere once they've made it out.

I don't have much to give in US$ right now, kind of fallen on some tough times. I do have L$ in abundance, though, and I shall be happy to share it. Thanks a lot for letting us know about this!

Thanks Jonquille! I approached Pathfinder to make sure we could get some official donation box set up but was told the LL could not directly take Linden's and exchange them personally. But he did make and put out the sign and there is no doubt that FlipperPA has the integrity to make sure the money gets to the American Red Cross.

Also at the Waterhead Hurricane Relief and Memorial location, you will find direct links to the Red Cross, Network for Good, and Mission Fish amoung others for those who would feel more comfortable donating directly.

We at GOM have always supported projects like this. Send me an email (tom@gamingopenmarket.com), and I'll see about setting up a commission-free account for this fundraiser like we did for the relay for life, tsunami relief, etc.

I was just in contact with FlipperPA and he said that he still has his commission-free account used for the Realy for Life. Thanks to you and GOM for doing this for us.

Now I'm confused. I just paid a contribution to a sign at Waterhead owned by Kim Richelieu and then found the one owned by Pathfinder Linden (and paid the same to that). Am I missing something?

The site has dropping enabled so people can leave momentos and such. Other residents have left their own donations signs and I guess like anything in this world, we have to trust that they are going to do what they say.

Again if you feel more comfortable the donation kiosk at Waterhead 116,10 is the Pathfinder Linden one where the money goes to FlipperPA who did the Relay For Life charity event and he has a no fee GOM account and is handling that transaction.

There are two other signs there collecting money. I'd like to know the same about those, I will contact the owners of the signs and find out.

BTW what is to keep someone from dropping a donation box and keeping all the money for themselves?

Just like anywhere or anything, the donater needs to take some responsibility to check things out. I went to this site, found the the Linden owned sign, and donated only to that one.

RR - I love seeing the total grow, wow! It's very cool what the people of SL can do.

If I did the math correctly at a current exchange rate of $3.55, it would be $2,247.15 USD.

Thanks to everyone who has been donating and who helped in the set up! We have surpassed L$400,000 - I'm amazed! As for owners of other signs, I can not attest to them; I have given Pathfinder the password to the account being used to collect these funds to maintain transparency. I'd encourage others collecting funds to both (a) do it under a dedicated account just for those funds and transactions; and (b) give a Linden the password to that they can review the financial transactions.

Regards,

-Flip

O.O I really hope that the other sign owners donate the money considering that amount.

I will definitely go through in my stipend plus some extra this evening.

Hello. The figures after "Donate Your Stipend Day" showed it raised about L$132,000. As of Tuesday September 13th, the total donated was L$1,020,163!.

Of course the Hurricane Relief and Memorial location in Waterhead (116,10) is still there and a donation kiosk is still available if you would like to give. :)
