http://www.gearlive.com/index.php/news/article/total_immersions_augmented_reality_02040854/From that site: From: someone Total Immersion’s D’Fusion software solution allows for real-time video capture and perfect merges between video streams and 3D objects. All you need is a camera, a few sensors, and a HUD. This turns your world into an immersive gaming experience, where you are IN the game...or where the game is all around you. Pretty amazing. Imagine building something in SL with that interface, and rezzing things in a "real world" environment!

shit. that's slick.
I really hope it wasn't doctored.
I've been waiting for years for this sort of tech to make it to market, but I didn't expect 3D already!
I was expecting more like data-tagging objects in real-time video and UI-overlays over a wireless net...
wow.
3D. That demo video is pretty damn cool.

The fact that this message bumps this up does not mean it's not worth seeing, it just means you're being obstinate by not looking at it. It's cool. your kids are going to think you're crazy that you remember before this. the direct link to the video is HERE

I can envision a future in which people run local augmented reality nodes, consisting of computers and WiFi nodes, which people can publically access with standard equipment. Think about how interesting such a world would be. As you walk down the street, you observe a Starax-esque statue, left their for people to observe. Signs and flier are posted in three-D, with animation and sound. You sit in the cafe discussing a project with your colleagues, and diagram the the discussion by drawing in mid-air or by building a little model.
Ahhhh. That would be extraordinary.

Ahhhh. That would be extraordinary. That's so cool! my future is that Sinistar is out to get me, and i'm mining asteroids, desperately, to build a bomb to counteract him. Yours is a LOT cooler. what's really cool is that your 'extraordinary' is in fact going to become, literally, 'ordinary'. Thanks for even letting us all see this, John Prototype.

How awesome would this be for a metropolitan-area game, laced with hotspots? The possibilities are wonderful. On-the-go Mystery Theater, Real-life X-Files, William Gibson-eque scifi game where the virtual world begins to intrude on the physical?
Imagine a game where you're supposed to be solving an overarching mystery. Coffe houses or restaurants with hotspots could participate; your clue is to order a particular item, something that's NOT EVEN LISTED on the menu, and as you sit and eat, little "sparks" of virtuality begin to flutter around you.
Very, very exciting stuff. I'm curious at how expensive it is though.
