If you don't have a job, why do you, apply for a Beta, and then cry knowing full and good you won't be able to play it? It amazes me how many people don't have jobs.
I realize this is a tough economic time, but sitting on the computer playing a game, no matter what it is or is called is not gonna help you find one quicker. I just don't understand why so many people do this. Out of all the Beta games I have played I would say 80% of the people I end up meeting or associating with either don't have a job, don't work cause they say they're on disablity, or just don't work at all. Is work that much of a big deal?
I mean CMON, get off your butts and make some money. I can't believe how many lazy people there are in this country and all over the world. Sitting in front of a pc is not gonna put bread on the table, unless you are one of those ebay gurus or whatever. If you are aware a game is about to go live and are sad cause you can't join, get a job and stop posting about it on the boards. Waiting for Flames, send em I"M READY.

You sound like someone who is either in University, or has never been laid off during a major tech-downturn somewhere like the bay area, where employeers seriously post listings for "unpaid internships" with 10+ years of experience required because they know that the job market is that bad.

Neo, your ignorance startles me. I started in the IT business as a coder for a company in San Fransisco, and I got laid off for not kissing my boss's ass well enough. For 3 years I was unemployed, not able to find a job anywhere. Does that mean I was lazy? Does that mean that I shouldn't have gotten fired in the first place?
I now own a company of my own. I'm still broke, because schools don't want to turn hi-tech yet. Does that mean I'm lazy?
Not everyone doesn't have a job because they're too lazy to get one, Neo.

Agreed, W.
I'm a UNIX systems engineer. The market is rough right now. Personally I got lucky and was only out of work for 3 weeks when my last company went under. I have friends who weren't so lucky. Some were out of work for over a year, some still are. It's not a matter of lazy, or unskilled, many of them have 5-10 years of experience, and are looking for a job every day.
It might be easy to say "go out and make some money", but heading down to Walmart to get a stocking job is a real blow to your 10 year professional engineering career. And for all those wondering, yes, the market is *THAT* bad.

Heartily agree with all the repliers.
I just graduated from college in December... if I wasn't working for the State, I would probably be working fast food (if I could even find one). I have a friend who graduated in Spring '01 and still cannot find a job.
A friend who manages a bowling alley says he will not hire anyone without a Bachelors. He gets more than enough grad apps. That's cleaning toilets etc. A LOT of entry level jobs now require college education because, like the guys above mentioned, the market is *that* bad.
I'm not saying there are no jobs out there... just that the requirements for those jobs have all dramatically increased. Si is exactly right... it's hard to go to entry level when you have had a professional career.
After seeing my friends apply for job after job with no interviews... after seeing friends with computer science degrees take clerical positions because they have to pay the bills... I can see why some people want to just give up.
**Edit**
I do agree that there are some people from every category mentioned that are lazy, maybe mooching off the system, etc... but lumping them all together and telling them to "get off their butts" is just inviting negatory replies, especially considering the current economy.

I cant believe this post, what nerve...
Totall agree with the replys. I have been unemployeed myself, and well try to get a job when in your field of expretice every employeer has specific guidelines. Not to mention the competition for that one position.
What about those who struggle everyday to get their heads up in the field they know a few things about that don't have the "minimum" requirements. Who still fire away 100's of resumes and apps a week. Who then constantly get turned down due to lack of experience or papers "degrees" in that field. But still try everyday and don't have the financial resources to get that "degree"?
Sure Beta has a price when its "go live" time. But my god some people have a need to escape for a bit b4 they go nuts after trying to get that job.
Its much harder on a person to find a job than work one.
As I said "ON" the person, if there was no means of personal escapism and enjoyment in life there would be much more chaos IRL.
Also side note.....
For that person who has not quite enough experience or no degree in the field they have a know how in. They go to Walmart or McDonalds and get turned down because they are "over Qualified"
So DON'T tell me I'm freakin lazy.
I am the one sending out 100's of apps and resumes a week. I am the one getting turned down cuz of lack of exp. I am the one getting turned down for being "over qualified.
So just cuz you got a job don't make everyone else lazy. Consider yourself lucky you are not in our shoes.
Also not all people on disability are undeserving, sounds like you think most are undeserving, but that is another can'o'worms.
It's the people who don't try at all that upset me. But to come out acting like all us unemployeed people aren't trying really is wrong.

I feel for the person who can't find work. I have 2 daughters who are having a heck of a time finding a job, one who is expecting by the way. I have been lucky to have been employed at a single employer for almost 20 years. I have hard times making ends meet from time to time, but everyone deserves a little enjoyment in life. I don't think wether your employed or not should make a darn bit of difference on how you choose to spend your time when your not working. I have numerous friends who don't work, most for a darn good reason .... no work available. If the families fed and looked after, then why not have some fun while you can.
PS, I almost dropped out of second life myself due to finances.

Maybe the post should have started: Why do people who can't write coherently?
Agreed on issues of unemployment. I know of more than one person with a MSc. (CS) who lied about their education in order to get a job waiting tables at a diner. That's the only job they could find.

I truly apologize to all people who were upset over this post. I went back and read over what I typed and I felt really bad. I truly am sorry to those I upset by doing this. My intention was not to make anyone mad, or upset. Please disregard my posting, I will have to be more aware of things before just blurting something out. Again I really do apologize, I'm a creep for doing it. So sorry to all.

Heh, Neo... no prob & apology accepted here. It's just a very touchy subject, especially at this time.
Replying to your post is also a way to scream at the current economy and what is happening in the job sector, since the economy is certainly not listening to us. d:

Apology accepted Neo. I, and I think others too, used your post as a stress ball for our financial situation.

Well I came across possably the most outwardly offended (ya think?) Appology accepted Neo, and yes it was just too easy to take it out on ya in here as this is a tough time. Very annoying time even. Plus I was in a bad mood cuz my puter died and now $ to fix it cuz of no employment. So I am also sorry to you Neo and everyone else that was subjected to my outrage. Now I got a SL membership and no computer I call my own lol. Lyn and I share a computer now So if anyone has a Good mother board that can handle a Athlon 1600+ (not duron or T-Bird) and it can use pc133 ram. That will support 8x AGP. That would be willing to sell for L$ let me know. I would entertain any reasonable serious offer. Also even a Chip-Board combo of any chip type greater than 1500mhz and the board uses pc133 and has 8x AGP for reasonable would be cool too.

It helps even more when most of the people involved in the debate are pretty cool to begin with. I like to delude myself that most people here don't post things hoping to instill so huge wave of emotional chaos. Maybe I am just naive like that.
