Anyone know what the option "Avatar Vertex Program" does? It says it's faster if I select it, but what am I missing if I do?

Avatar vertex enables things like hair and clothes blowing in the wind, also it makes some avatar details look different. Also if you have an ATI card it can give you extra avatar bugs(black/red faces at certain distances, black bodies in mouselook with "show avatar in mouselook" on)! :D Hehe.

I think it attempts to make things like wrinkles in clothes and in the face better also, but depending on your personal preference it can look better or worse.

Edit to add details about bugs.

Bizatch, im helping!

Two pictures, one with vertex on, and one with it off. It makes a sizeable difference.

As you can also see, it makes flora sway :D !

Yeah, avatar vertex program is a weird one.

It actually adds a lot of effects and if your card supports it is faster because it is offloading the effects to the video card.

If your card supports it.

If you have an older card (not sure.... GeForce2 / 4mx? older ATIs?) then it may try to do all the fancy stuff in software which could really hurt performance.

The bets way to see the effect is to put on a dress or really baggy pants and go flying. Long hair is cool too.

It doesnt seem to do anything on my crappy fx5200.
It never ceases to amaze me how my old, unsupported Kyro2-based graphics card could render bump mapping, shineys, and all of those hair and clothing effects in 1.1 but this newer one mysteriously cant cope with it. I thought the whole point of the new FX line of cards was that they were all feature-complete and varied only in performance.
I dont care if it makes SL run at 5 FPS, I NEED TO HAVE SHINEYS ON!!!

A world without shiny is not a world I wish to see.

Oh how great shiny is to me.

I love things when they are as shiny as they could be.

Oh how great shiny is to me.

If there were a great big shiny ball chasing us all, others may flee...

But not me...

I would stand and look in awe at this shiny object coming at my current x,y, and z.

Oh how great shiny is to me.
