I need to talk to you about the buzzer situation, and I want to pay you for the work you already did.
You can email me at shebang@your2ndlife.com or I'll try to catch you in world if I don't hear from you via email. (Bandwidth sharing issues here at home mean I don't know when I'll be able to be in world *sigh*)

Here's what I've got, and I think it'll be more useful than people just all shouting at once.
Every person has a buzzer, there can be any number of these.
The host(s) has a podium, there is one of these.
The host asks a question (or plays a tune or whatever) and people who know the answer touch their buzzer. The podium whispers the name of the person who buzzed first. The host can then touch the podium to reset it.
There's a sample setup of this with three buzzers near my place. Check it out when you can get on line. The red and green boxes are for the host to touch to indicate "right" or "wrong".

I can't stop talking

Two things
It's not clear from the above, but the scripts mentioned above could easily be changed to show the first few people that ring in, in order, rather than just the very first person.
Are you using llPreloadSound in whatever you're using to play the sounds?
(special bouns third thing: I don't expect to be paid for the work I did on this if you don't end up using it. I volunteered this stuff unasked, and even if it's not useful for this particular event, I think it would be good for other quiz-show type things, so I can flog it there).

Might be a nice public project, a small quiz bowl studio sort of thing.
Reminds me of academic quiz bowls back in high school.
Would be great for trivia nights, and I'm sure the Lindens would reward.

Sorry to use the board as a personal messaging service but...
Shebang, have you tried setting all the sliders in the "network" part of the "preferences" settings all the way down? That might help with the packet lossage you were experiencing.
(note, I said I was sorry, I didn't say I was going to stop doing it)

Yeah, I've tried playing with the sliders and it doesn't really help. I don't get the packet loss everywhere -- just some places, and not consistently. There might well've been routing problems between me and SL last night, or it might just be my poor old system desperately trying to keep up.
Anyhoo, Haney and I talked a bit more after you left, and it looks like we're going to be able to use your buzzer system for the Tune Party! Yippee! So now you 'n I need to haggle a price.
