I'm curious how often the Lindens rezone protected land and offer it for auction. I purchased First Land in Drawbridge a few weeks ago, and I was thrilled that it was right next to a waterfront parcel labeled as protected land and owned by Governor Linden. The spot has a great view, and I and my neighbors consider ourselves lucky.
However, I discovered last night that the Lindens had changed the 2048m^2 plot of waterfront from protected to auctionable property about a week ago. The auction closed on Monday (2004-10-25), with the land going to a well-known real estate trader. I want to preserve the natural beauty of the landscape, so I bought the land from the trader this morning at a 30% markup from what it sold for at auction (very reasonable, all things considered). I was planning to tier up eventually, but I wasn't happy with needing to do it so soon.
I wish that I'd had some idea the land was going to be sold. I had no idea that protected land ever went to auction. I was under the impression that "protected" meant the land would remain with the Lindens in perpetuity. It appears that here, as in real life, public lands may be sold to private interests.
Has anyone else ever seen protected land go to auction?

Was it protected land? Or land that went up for auction and was sold? I've never heard of this but I've only been around a few months.

All I can say is that if that were to happen with the protected land near my plots... ALL land traders would get permanently banned from all my land everywhere... and also, the people who buy those plots from them...

Often, when sims first come online, the whole thing is marked as "Protected Land". It seems to be the default name when no other name is given. Until every auction has closed on a sim, I would not expect any plot so named to remain that way. (It might, but then again, it might not.)

That parcel was named incorrectly. As Tiger said, it started out as a larger parcel named Protected Land and was then subdivided but not renamed.
Sorry for the confusion.

Ah, that makes sense; it was a simple mistake. My fear was that this sort of thing might happen often, which would make purchasing land even more of a gamble than it already is. Thanks for your response, Ryan. My fears have been allayed. Now I need to figure out what to do with 2048m^2 of pristine waterfront.

Okay, a little disconcerting. I just hope that little 788m2 eucalyptus grove behind my land in Gallinas does not end up the same way. Right now its part of the whole Gallinas 'protected' parcel... I just hope it stays that way. According to the Linden I asked about this a couple weeks ago, it should be safe, but after Chandra's thing here, it makes me nervous, especially since Gallinas is the next sim over from Drawbridge.
