Being newbie... ish, there's a fair chance that this has been covered before so bare with me if it has.

When I log on to the SL Community site, I cna see all my SL friends who are online at any given time. But unless I log into Sl too I can't communicate with them.

How about LL getting it together so that 'email' (for want of a better phrase or idea at this stage) can be sent from my computer or from part of the Community log-in page to friends who are currently online.

My reason for coming up with this is that while I'm at work, I can't get on to SL (for reasons of professionalism, wanting to keep my job, firewalls and not particularly wanting my colleagues to see me running round with semi-nekkid women and carrying a sword or whatever). But lo! Behold! All my friends SLing their lives away and I CAN'T COMMUNICATE WITH THEM.

So how about having something where, once I've logged into the Community area I could send a message to, say, Jim.Stonecutter@secondlife.com?

Hanging my arse out in the wind and inviting to be shot off...

If they IM you while you're offline and you have checked the "IM to email" box in your SL preferences, the IMs will be sent to your inbox. And when you answer back the emails, they will be delivered as IMs to the person who contacted you :)

Beware though that all lines starting with ">" are stripped, so it is best that you delete all quotes from the received message in your answer. Also, there is a 255 or 1024 character limit, IIRC.

Hey, this is the general forum... less of the usefull information please. You'll give us all a good name..

A further note, you can reply via Email as many times as you wish as long as you keep the orriginal IM, however I don't think you can Email - IM someone who has not already IM'd you... ie. you can't send email to surina.skallagrimson@sl.com (or whatever the address would be) unless I first IM you and it goes to your email for you to reply to.

Not true - The original IM (the session) will expire eventually. I made a little device called Email-2-IM that lets you send messages from Email to IM, so you can send a message to your friend inworld, who can then IM you back and then you can carry on as normal, letting SL forward you IMs, which you then reply to.

More info: Email-2-IM

I thought the session ID was 3333333 xored with the user's inworld key ? If so it won't ever expire and you can keep sending emails there.

Anyway, the WebInformation thing you're offering is great, thanks :)

I've written an in world / out of world chat script that requires a back end DB (currently coded for MySQL) and PHP with XML-RPC libraries installed. Basically, its sends chat from the web to an in world prim via XML-RPC, and retrieves chat from in world ever 3.1 seconds (3 second delay in llRemoteDataReply GRRRRRRRRRRRRR) to spout to the web. I've been considering open-sourcing this, however, it potential to be mod'd to be a listening device is a bit worrysome to me.

Regards,

-Flip

Not offhand. but they definitely do expire (unless things have changed). When I replied to an old one once, I got back a bounce message saying this IM session has expired.

Now I know I should be hitting up FlipperPA for XML-RPC info/help.

My device is nowhere nearly as involved- you just send an email.
Just lets you initiate, then you let the SL system take over. Of course, if both of you are not in SL, you can each pass messages back and for with email & the box. No mysql or RPC required.

This could be wrong but I was under the impression they last only as long as your current SL session. You log and they expire.
